Today on KottkeFilter: the much-anticipated 'WHAT' project from 0sil8 Heavy Industries, code-named 'Danza,' has finally been released. And let me tell you, does it ever live up to the hype!

Funny stuff. Good job Mathowie, Jason and Megway.

that so rocks. I wish I had friends like Meg and Jason.

Ha! Ok, I thought it was just gonna be mock-hype, but damn, that's funny.

Where can I get one of those "Megway" t-shirts? :-)

Class. I'll never ask for a pony again.

I *totally* Meg. (Oh, yeah, and you too mathowie--just in a different, really manly sort of way.)

One of the funniest deadpan parodies I've seen in quite a while -- this is worthy of National Lampoon back when it was good.

So happy to hear it isn't going to replace little clown bicycles! Very amusing way to start my workday - thanks!

I just had to spend three minutes trying to explain to my roommate what exactly it was I was laughing at.
posted by mrbula at 7:20 AM on December 12, 2001

I haven't laughed that hard in months.

Megway won't change the world as we know. The technologies that were developed to make Megay possible could though! The dynamic stabilization (comfy shoes, inner ear) and the pretty colors (hair dye) could have quite an impact on cities of the future!

You just watch!

That logo is genius. Thanks for this.

I think it's great, but...

Anyone want to mirror it? The MeFi server is getting hammered.

best line: "Just think forward and you go forward; think backward and you go backwards.". We need more backward-thinking tech like this.

ROTFLMMFAO

And remember, always wear your helmet when using the Megway. Classic.

Reminds me of that My Life with the Trill Kill Kult song "Ride the Mindway"..."Ride the Megway!"

If the Megway TH doesn't take off like a rocket, then the terrorists have already won.

We. Are. Not. Amused.

Actually, we are. This is very funny stuff!

Less funny: Editorial cartoons about Segway.

The real Segway.

Yeah, sorry about that. We, um, underestimated the amount of traffic that this thing would get. The movie is mirrored now and load balanced between a few servers, so it should be speedier.

We. Are. Not. Amused.

Actually, we are. This is very funny stuff!

Oh wow, thanks. We tried not to cut on the Segway too much, mostly because we all think it's so damn cool. Now if we could only get a test drive.... *cough*

I don't get it.

Keep in mind this is a 1.0 release. Version 2.0 could be quite nice.

Also, I want a test drive one so bad right now I'm hopping up and down.

Incredible. I love Meg's blank expression. Where's the pricing information though? This thing would make a great stocking-stuffer...
posted by D at 11:14 AM on December 12, 2001

I agree that it's all about Meg's expression.

deadpan = irony = comedy

posted by mr_crash_davis at 11:50 AM on December 12, 2001

I'm confused. Earlier publicity/hype showed the Megway in different colors [and, I might add, suggested different capabilities and business plans]. Is Henry Ford black going to be the only one offered? And this was a very early spy picture taken during some sort of test drive gone horribly wrong. Have those behavioral quirks been ironed out by now?

Matt's cat wasn't afraid of the Megway because its operation is largely noiseless. Advanced technology.

I just had to spend three minutes trying to explain to my roommate what exactly it was I was laughing at.

Would you explain it to me as well? "Megway" is about as rote a parody as there is.

The sycophants' posts are much funnier.
posted by KLAX at 3:55 PM on December 12, 2001

Gosh, not everyone who finds this genuinely funny is necessarily a sycophant.

That aside, I the new Megway, even if it still doesn't allow me to breathe underwater!!! :(

(Although I can see how the Megway could possibly be used for that purpose. *wink, wink*)
posted by brownpau at 6:09 PM on December 12, 2001

man... i was hoping that it really would involve breathing underwater, instead of just being a segway parody. well, i would say i was dissapointed, were it not for Mark's post. Now, THAT was frickin' hilarious.
posted by lotsofno at 6:46 PM on December 12, 2001

I wasn't going to say anything, but I wne to make lunch, and couldn't get it off my mind. The parody was done by two people who are Friends of MeFi™ and by Matt himself. It's not sycophantic to say you found it amusing, if you did, and it's just plain rude and unpleasant to whine about bootlicking and post cleverclever mock-yawns.

At least make a attempt to be civil, damnit, people. If you didn't find it funny, fair enough. Move on. There's no need to piss all over both the people who made the thing (who I reiterate, are part of this community, and if nothing else deserve at least common courtesy, if nothing else) and the people who enjoyed it.

This should be in MeTa perhaps, but I don't think it merits much discussion. Boorish, childish behaviour like this is just the sort of thing that eventates in our weekly handwringing MeTasessions about 'how bad things are getting around here.'

The sycophants' posts are much funnier.

If we got a laugh out of this, as I did, we have to lie now? To appear cool? To who? (runs out of question marks)

Give that a miss, I don't care how it comes across, or what it says about me. I thought it was funny.
posted by lucien at 11:37 PM on December 12, 2001

Lucien, I think you mean "To whom." You want to appear cool and intelligent, don't you?

That is the single largest number of spelling mistakes I've ever made in a Metafilter post. All steamed up, I was. Sorry. You get the gist, I hope.

It's not sycophantic to say you found it amusing, if you did, and it's just plain rude and unpleasant to whine about bootlicking and post cleverclever mock-yawns.

At this point, you can't be surprised that some people are so contrarian and "too cool for school" that they showed up to piss on the whole thing. Maybe it's my Catholic upbringing, but what better way is there to pass time than make people defensive for enjoying something?

I loved the parody. Droll, hilarious, and creepy. The funniest part was Jason wearing a safety helmet while the Megway doesn't.
