Guitar Geek diagrams, in loving detail, the (probable) effects and speaker setups of an incredible number of guitarists and bassists. Examples range from super-stripped down to staggerly huge to downright bizarre. It's pretty cool (and, admittedly geeky) in a sick, fanboy kinda way.

I feel dirty and a little tingly now. Thanks that is awesome.

Great site.

Favorites: J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr and Richard Lloyd of Television.

I love Guitar Geek, have done for ages. I was a little disappointed when they stopped putting "geek" logos on the diagrams and switched (mostly) to the correct brand names - the geek logos were an endearing quirk of the site. In a mailout last month they said that a redesigned site would be launching on the 1st of December, but it hasn't happened yet...

That is an incredible link. Thank you.

I'm with eyeballkid, I've never felt so tingly.

yikes hipstertrash, he has more pedals than some organists.

whoa, I wish we had a site like that in high school. Many questions plagued me as listened to Three of a Perfect Pair, wondering, how did he do that stuff?

th3 - I know, isn't it great? I've been waiting for years for GuitarGeek to get a diagram of Holmstrom's setup ... it was worth the wait. Thanks, 40 Watt, I hadn't looked there in awhile.

The best part? "Boss DM-2 Analog Delay housed in a Dunlop Wah Casing. The Pivoting Pedal Controls the DM-2 Time/Rate knob"

freakin' beautiful ... and a damn nice guy, too. I could tell you about hanging out in their tour bus on acid, but methinks that is a story for another thread ...
posted by hipstertrash at 4:17 PM on December 20, 2001

Okay, how the hell does Holstrom get away without having some sort of noise gate on a setup with that many pedals? I can't even string 3 pedals in series without generating a hum big enough to vibrate the roof off my house!

Yikes.

Good Grief! That's a lot of gear. I felt decadent when I bought a distortion box for my bass! I think I need some more stuff.
Unfortunately, there's no info on some of my favorite reggae-influenced bass players! David J? Sly & Robbie? Dry & Heavy??

Drat. No listings for Adrian Belew, Bill Frisell, or Ali Farke Toure. Loads o' fun, though.

Mr Bali Hai -

My guesses ... 1) top of the line patch cords; 2) that volume pedal right in the middle of the chain; 3) the fact that a good portion of the pedals are always engaged (line noise is only really noticeable when playing clean); 4) the way the series is constructed -- it does make a difference what order the pedals are in, depending on the individual noise and power output of each pedal

Compare Ament's setup with McCready's setup.

Man is someone compensating? Well? Hmm...?

Sniff. *cries* This is the most beautiful site I've ever seen. Just one more stomp box... honest, that's all I need. One more, and I won't need another. I'll be done. Seriously.... I'll have the sound I'm looking for...

be interesting to see the same sort of site for electronic artists like aphex twin or even depeche mode.

mb01--

I wish there was something like that for electronic artists as well...Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet a large portion of the diagrams on "electronicmusicgeek.com" would look something like this:

Computer

CD burner

Finally! Finally I know! Now I can die happy... well, right after I duplicate his setup, anyway. (Did anybody see when MBV's original Jazzmaster was auctioned on EBay? The one used on the cover of Loveless? Jesus!)

Ok, here's my setup at present:

Samick Stratocaster Ripoff ($40, bought damaged from friend)
|
|
"Prestige" PA (30 years old, "borrowed" from parents)

What can I say? I'm a poor college student...

Yeah I'll do my setup too, coz I love it:

Gretch Sparklejet Hollow body

|
Crybaby Wah
|
Danelectro Tremelo
|
Ibanez Flanger
|
Ibanez Digital Delay

The Guitargeek site is a bit here-and-there though, isn't it? It's got obscure folks like Jas Sweeny from Sweet William, but no Sonic Youth or Smashing Pumpkins.

Well, this pretty much guarantees that I will never be able to truly recreate Brian May's sound. Cripes. Half his gear is homemade! Time to pick up a book on luthiers.

Thanks, 40 Watt!

Looking at Dimebag Darrell's setup (from Pantera) reminded me of one of the coolest effects I've heard in a while. He uses a noise gate on his rack, and in the studio he was standing next to the drum kit as Vinnie was warming up, and he was fiddling with the tuning knobs on his guitar. The vibrations from the drums were opening the noise gate and allowing all kinds of cool feedback to float through, changing pitch as the tuning knobs were turned. They used this to great effect in the song "Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills". Cool stuff.
