Have I got this right - distant objects appear dimmer and therefore farther away than their red-shift calculations would suggest. This may be because light is spontaneously disintegrating on its way to us?

The only thing worth reading is this, the last sentence:

However, distinguishing this model from the accelerating Universe paradigm will likely be easier through improving the bounds on the couplings of ultra-light axions, by understanding the details of the intergalactic magnetic field, or by a precise independent determination of the equation of state for the dark energy component . . .
