Evidence that gin is indeed good for you. If a little bit of it is good, lots of it must be great!

A swig straight out of the bottle?

Well that proves it's the bloody quinine in the tonic water that kills.

...or the glasses. The truly health conscious swig their booze straight from the bottle, natch.

"When Fortin was a little girl in Lake St. Jean, Quebec, her father would line up the 13 children and give them each a shot of gin before sending them off to bed. "
Then he probably had a few nips himself, after dealing with 13 kids.

I don't know, 'The Shining' scared me off of gin for the rest of my life.

Bombay Sapphire Gin.......accept no substitutes.

Maybe it's my working class ethos, but Gilbey's has always been my choice. Clean, no frills, no added perfumes or crap. Plus the distinct aesthetic of the heavy, frosted glass bottle.

I lined a mantel with Gilbey's 1.75's back in my bachelor days.

Fes, a working class ethos would have you drinking Seagram's pre-mixed Gin & Juice, which now comes in "Blue Beast with Ginseng" flavor(no joke) for the homeopathic alcoholic.

Drinking gin in excess makes you impotent. This is what an uncle of mine who loves his drink told me when I was eighteen or so. I have never drunk Gin since and am happy to report all cylinders fire. Not sure if it is true though, or just an old wives/uncle's tale.

Has anyone ever tried Hendrick's Gin? It sounds amazing, but I can't find it in Austin and I'd like to hear a good review of it before I order this bastard off the internet. Cucumber gin. MMMMmmmmm.

(sorry if this offends anyone's working class ethos. I drink the cheap stuff, too, but you gotta treat yourself every now and then.)

Seagram's pre-mixed Gin & Juice

Perhaps my working class ethos is flagging :) Calling Dr. Springsteen!

Gimme a blue beast... make it a double.

It's amazing that this woman lived past 40, much less 101-- she's from Pittsfield, Ma., which just happens to be one big-ass Superfund site (and, *ahem*, my birthplace). It's got to be more than just the gin.

Hendrick's is damn good stuff. Pick some up today!

btw, bittennails, G&Ts are my drink of choice and I've never had any trouble. Your uncle was just messing with you.

Bombay Sapphire is the best liquid in the world. Mmm... I'm going to go make a Gin and Tonic right now.

Milk & Cheese say: Gin makes a man mean! Let's all get drunk and riot!

Heh. Anybody get that?

Here's a picture to jog your memories.

One of my favorite Mojo Nixon songs is Gin Guzzlin' Frenzy. The song's not really one of his best, but that phrase just sends shivers down my spine...

Gin makes me sleepy. I don't know why. But I suppose that sleepy is better than raving, violent and incontinent.

Uh, not that, uh...

Damn.

We've got a saying at work that "Gin makes you want to do one of two things: Fight or F+ck. You don't get to choose which."

So true. So true.

William Hogarth, of course, had a different view of gin. You can't quite read it in this rendering, but the sign above the door in the bottom left reads, "Drunk for a penny, Dead drunk for two pence, Clean straw for nothing."

Beer, though... beer was different.

Yeah, I get that, and was gonna link that too before seeing your post. Milk & Cheese = very funny.

Sapphire? I think not.

Tanqueray Ten is the gin of champions. A Ten martini extra dry with three big olives.... oooh. i'm salivating already.
posted by syn at 6:01 PM on January 24, 2002

I agree with syn. Sapphire is fine for mixing but, for the full flavour of gin(as in a dry martini: no olives, just a twist for me)you really have to go for the Tanqueray Ten or, my favourite, the Royal Navy standby, Plymouth Gin. Distilled in the same place, in the same copper still, for almost 300 years. A beautiful drink!

Ever tried a dirty martini Miguel? Recommended, particularly for the olive fan...

A friend and I decided a couple of years back to set out and get hammered on gin to see what would happen. I don't remember too much except it was not as bad as I had expected.

We drank Gordons. Alot of people recently have said Bomaby is overrated.
