The Boss of the Bossa Nova.

The Boss of the Bossa Nova. A very thorough tribute site to Antonio Carlos Jobim, with scores of scores, english lyrics, and rare recordings. The music's greatest interpreter is the enigmatic genius Joao Gilberto. For more on brazilian music in general, there's Slipcue, AllBrazilianMusic, and The Brazilian Sound. (For Portuguese speakers only, there's an excellent encyclopedia on the subject.)

A nice, informative piece on Gilberto (I happen to be listening to ELA E'CARIOCA right now!) Appreciate the link, Liam.

Another interesting character of Bossa Nova was Vinicius de Moraes - poet, diplomat, singer, and the style's greatest lyricist (Garota de Ipanema, Insensatez, A Felicidade etc.).

Liam, someday, but not soon, please post something less magnificent, just to prove you're human. :)

João Gilberto is probably the only true genius in the whole of popular music. He had tremendous arguments with Jobim at the very beginnings of Bossa Nova. Jobim wanted an orchestra. Gilberto showed all it took was him and a guitar. It's a pity he's more well known in the U.S. for the records where Stan Getz keeps drowning him with his eager-beaver saxophone.

My favourite Gilberto track is his instrumental version of Ary Barroso's "Na Baixa do Sapateiro". Wow.

Miguel Cardoso has a prodigious presence. As a bonus, he also posts on Metafilter from time to time.
