Godzilla (MP3).I was searching for Godzilla stuff and ran into it.The so called great nirvana seems to taken Blue Oyster Cults Godzilla and changed it a little.
no, it's the Blue Oyster Cult singing "Godzilla" a long ass time before "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out. Jeez. The point is that Kurt ripped off the hook and even the "Ugh!" from of the B.O. Cult. And oddly enough, the two chord part of Teen Spirit that isn't in _this_ song is from teh Pixies song "Debaser."
And "Come as Your Are" was a rip of "Eighties" by.... erm. By.. anyone remember?

I always thought Teen Spirit was ripped off of Boston's "More Than a Feeling".

Er, no it's actually a band called Ultraviolet Eye who've turned godzilla into a nirvana song. The BOC version is totally 70s sclock rock (that said I do sort of like BOC)

Everything Nirvana did was ripped off from the Pixies. The only thing that was different was that Nirvana had no humor and Black Francis makes me giggle.

and there's no such thing as a Pixies vs Nirvana debate... Cobain was in dear love with the Pixies and wouldnt placed them over his head anyday... and they are better either way.

Just to clarify what's going on here....
"Godzilla" was a BOC song from back in their heyday. Don't know what it sounds like; I'm not a BOC fan. Ultraviolet Eye is a contemporary band into ironic parodies and psychedelica. Ultraviolet Eye has covered "Godzilla" in the style of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", which Kurt Cobain had always referred to as a Pixies knock-off.
The original poster was apparently deceived by the post-modern trickery of Ultraviolet Eye into believing that the original BOC version of "Godzilla" sounded an awful lot like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and has therefore accused Cobain of ripping off BOC. Which is a ridiculous accusation, since everybody knows that the only 90's Seattle band ripping of schlocky 70's stadium rockers is Pearl Jam.
Do I have that all right?

Now that the controversy's been settled and the pissing contest is over...
The signature guitar lick from "Godzilla" (which is a great song from a very underrated band has been put to good use by other sources. 3rd Bass sampled it to good effect on the track "Problem Child" from their album Derelicts of Dialect.
And mr roboto-Aren't you forgetting Soungarden's Black Sabbath fixation? Admittedly, Sabbath is not all that schlocky, but to me neither is Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, Cheap Trick or any of it if you listen to it right..

Soundgarden...right; I forgot Soundgarden. Of course, the whole "grunge" thing was pretty much just a retread of early (70s) heavy metal. What I find most interesting about that era is that the two bands most associated with it by most people are Nirvana and Pearl Jam, both of whom were at best (worst?) only marginally "grunge". Nirvana (who admittedly, had earlier work with much more heavy metal influence, I'm thinking about their public perception post-Nevermind, though) was a pop band, with lots of screaming and loud guitars--a description that would also fit the Pixies to a tee. Pearl Jam, early on at least, struck me as a classic rock band with very little heavy metal influence...

Geez, that's what I liked about it. Grunge was great, basically because it brought actual rock music back to the top 40 and because it combined the hamfisted testosterone release of metal with the raw fury and DIY spirit of punk.(I'm also willing to bet that Alice in Chains had some AC/DC and Jethro Tull in their record collections as well.)They also seemed to be commited to making their music actually about something as well. They didn't always succeed but who does?
They also made plaid flannel and long greasy hair cool, so for a breif moment I was fashionable...

Hey, don't get me wrong; I'm not criticising grunge for reworking metal. Hell, we all know that there's nothing new under the sun and that any artist's primary job is the creative rearrangement of old ideas. I never really liked grunge, but I certainly appreciated it--a welcome respite from the garbage that popular music consists of most of the time. It would be wonderful to see something like that happen now to throw Britney, N*Sinc, Creed, etc. off the charts...

Belive it or not, I think a ray of hope might be Christina Aguilera.

No, hear me out. Apparently, at a recent show, she announced "This song is by my new favorite singer, Etta James," and did a rendition of at last. Maybe she'll do a Monkees, tell her handlers to go screw themselves and do an old school soul record, she does have a decent set of pipes, so who knows?
Call me crazy, but we can hope.

I agree with the Aguilera thing - but I heard Etta James today on an old Chuck Berry tape, and she was awful.
Singing "Rock and Roll Music", she just couldn't find the tune.
