Well, actually, to get the proper "mountainous" look, when lower lines cross lines above them the upper lines ought to be obscured. Also, since the original graphic is a plot of the periodic signal from the first pulsar ever discovered, the left and right extremities of each line should be constrained to be undeflected (or nearly so) so the peaks are roughly lined up in the middle.

As a pulsar astronomer who uses Arecibo, I'm contractually obliged to mention that the original Joy Division cover features pulsar data acquired at the Arecibo radio telescope by Hal Craft. Here's the definitive deep dive on the story by Jen Christiansen, featuring Hal Craft's thesis, the rare books collection at Cornell, and other fun stuff.

Okay, y'all answers make much more sense, because a graphic very, very similar to this is in the background of the original Alien, and I'd always wondered why.
