Everyone knows the Transformers and Batman, but what about the Black Hood and King Leonardo? The Pie Face Prince of Pretzelberg? Millie the Model? Reagan's Raiders? Those characters -- and many, many more -- are profiled at Don Markstein's Toonopedia, one man's ongoing attempt to document the history of newspaper comics, comic books, and animation, from Adam Strange to Zot!.

And Quake?

I personally love the Red Tornado. In fact, does anyone happen to know of a collection where All Star Comics #3 is reprinted? I'm curious (for a project I'm working on) to see how the pants-tearing scene is framed.

From the FAQ:
Q: Why don't you have [fill in blank]?

My Toonopedia™ is a work in progress, and always will be. In most cases, the reason I haven't covered a particular topic is simply that I haven't gotten to it yet. I will — but I can't say when, because I don't do them on any sort of a schedule. When I get to one — that's when it gets done.

Believe me, nobody is more aware than I, of how much work remains to be done on this project.
He's actually got quite a lot of them covered already! Thanks for the link - also, trying to identify the origin of each of the letters he uses in his index makes for an amusing diversion as well!

I loved Millie the Model! It was such a girl thing. She had a really cute on-again-off again photographer boyfriend - his name was Clicker.

My favorite issue was the one where she had a photo shoot and her hair was positively glam - so glam, in fact, that the head of the modelling agency she worked for (Mr. Somebody or other, looked like Cary Grant) was so taken with her beauty that he asked her out for that night. She went home and redid her hair. Oh the killer irony! I think it was loosely based on The Gift of The Magi. Thanks for the memories ;)

I blame my doppleganger.

Actually, Kaf, I've actually linked to the Toonopedia myself (in a post about early animation by Winsor McKay and George Herriman), but the only reference I saw to the project as a whole was in a in-thread comment. I spent a few hours reading the Toonopedia last week, and I thought the project (rather than an individual page) merited some attention. I mean, where else can you find about Space Cabby alongside introductions to Krazy Kat, Barks' Donald Duck, Pogo, and other recognized masterpieces?
