Happy Canada Day! I'm off to celebrate at The Maple Leaf in Covent Garden London tonight. Have a good one eh?
Come to think of it, I'll have me a bottle of that dry, fiery 100% prairie rye Alberta Premium, before they stop making. My father said that's what all Canadian whiskies tasted like once - before they became the cloyingly sweet and flowery eaux de cologne they are today.
And, my good deed, I'll recommend that all my fellow MetaFilter members use the amazing e-mail service offered by Fastmail. No adverts, no delays, no spam. It does say it's "for Canadians" but when it's as good and cheap(i.e. free)as this, surely we're all prepared to be Canadians in our own little way. ;)

For years, I would drink nothing but Royal Reserve rye, which was pretty much the cheapest on the market, and guaranteed to put hair on your chest.
One of the big selling points was a sticker on the back of the bottle with a maple leaf and the phrase "A Proud Canadian" which, once you'd drained the contents (and not before, dammit!), you could affix to the bumper of your pickup truck, or put on your hard hat before you went off for your shift at the mill.

oh stavros, I too learned that the hard way. I still bear the scars. I don't recommend Royal Reserve unless you want hair on your chest.

Ah, sadness, I am not a rye guy, though Crown Royal was once a weakness. To celebrate the day I will be happy to raise a chilled bottle of Molson Canadian to my wonderful and beautiful country. The Rant, if you want to read it on your own from time to time.

The best Canada Day I've ever had wasn't even spent in Canada, it was spent at the Maple Leaf Pub, where Frasermoo is going to be. Enjoy it! But be wary of the $165 charge for a two-four of Molson Canadian! It's cheaper to just get cheap booze from the offie around the corner.
Make sure you visit Canada House for free cake too.

Thanks, LOL. There is nothing like self-adulation on MIFI. Too bad I'm not Canadian. However, many years ago I was in Canada on my birthday. It was the only year I got to watch a fireworks show on my birthday.

Oh, and by the way, I would like to take this opportunity to announce my eligibility to run for the Office of President of The United States.
Campaign contributions can be made by sending Guinness to my home. In fact, that would probably contribute more to the safety and well-being of this country than any other gesture you could accomplish.
Oh, and Bag-Man! We can go halves on the beer, when I see how much shows up. Happy day to you!

I'm just hoping the fireworks go off as planned on the Hill... last year, the weather was miserable - wind, rain, cold, cold, cold. They had to cancel everything, which was a complete letdown for my first Canada Day in Ottawa.
Right now it's a balmy 30 degrees, little wind to speak of, and they're saying it might thunderstorm. Meh.
Y'all can check out what's going on with the Parliament Hill cam, if you want.

I just took a look, danwalker. Looks like the Hill has cleared out already. I guess PEI is the big benefactor this year. Anyone going to the party there?
I'm heading out to the North Vancouver festivities - we're also hoping it won't rain tonight and ruin the fireworks. Leave it to Vancouver....even in July you always have the rain.

Salmonberry, I live in Charlottetown, PEI and apparently the party down at the waterfront is big. I haven't been there yet, I've been spending my weekend enjoying the fruits of BC's #1 industry. I'm going to head down there once I combine a sufficient amount of Bacardi and Vanilla Coke.
