One more reason not to read the Drudge Report. Don't know how recent a development this is, but Matt has added pop-unders to his site. Looking at the source ... [inside] ... it looks like he sets a cookie to only have it happen occasionally -- I can't tell - maybe once a day? Still. No one needs another source of pop-unders. Why do we tolerate this sort of crap? Perhaps this calls for a boycott!

hope this works...
var doc=document; var url=escape(doc.location.href); var date_ob=new Date();
doc.cookie='h2=o; path=/;';var bust=date_ob.getSeconds();
if(doc.cookie.indexOf('e=llo') < 0 && doc.cookie.indexof('2=o')> 0){
doc.write('<scr '+'ipt language="javascript" src="http://media.fastclick.net'); doc.write('/w/pop.cgi?sid=8627&m=2&v=1.7e&u='+url+'&c='+bust+'">');
date_ob.setTime(date_ob.getTime()+43200000);
doc.cookie='he=llo; path=/; expires='+ date_ob.toGMTString();}

(actually, that's the default when you leave the url field blank, zekinskia .. I figured it would be sort of stupid to send a bunch of people to Drudge and at the same time call for a boycott.)

You don't need a boycott. Just use Mozilla. I haven't dealt with a popup for months.

I don't have a clue about that code, but I do hate pop-ups, pop-unders, banner ads, and whatever else these sites want to throw at us. I us ad blocking software, so I rarely, if ever, see these things.

BOYCOTT DRUDGEREPORT!

This is an independent publisher trying to make a little extra dough, and you want to boycott him when so many major websites with 10x the budget have been doing pop-ups and pop-unders for years? Personally I have never been served with a pop-under at Drudge (I visit every day), and if I am I won't be so annoyed as to boycott just because of the prevelance of such ads on other sites I visit. Maybe that is just a sad commentary on the state of internet advertising, but moreover I think there are better targets for your boycott.

What do you mean, "var doc=document; var url=escape(doc.location.href); var date_ob=new Date();
doc.cookie='h2=o; path=/;';var bust=date_ob.getSeconds();
if(doc.cookie.indexOf('e=llo') < 0 && doc.cookie.indexof('2=o')> 0){
doc.write('');
date_ob.setTime(date_ob.getTime()+43200000);
doc.cookie='he=llo; path=/; expires='+ date_ob.toGMTString();}" ?

A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others. (from "Link Guidelines" section of MetaFilter.com)

do we really need to talk about pop-unders again?

Or are you suggesting we march on Washington, as Beth suggested earlier?

MetaFilter is a reason to boycott Drudge! Well hell, who woulda guessed?

Seriously though . . . crunchland should have seriously reconsidered making this post if he didn't plan to link anything.

As an attempt to salvage this post, what is the best software out there for blocking ads, cookies, and scripts? I've used webwasher in the past to great success, but unfortunately there is no working version for Windows XP. Any suggestions?

I agree with cell divide--pop ups/unders/outs are crap, but if I boycott one of these sites, I will have to boycott them all, and then I will have many fewer things to read. Unfortunate, but not boycott-worthy.
