Election over -- Georgia Nicer Place should be the headline. While we've balanced out a bit in our primary, losing both Bob "I'm in the NRA but I don't check my gun" Barr and Cynthia "Aisle-bird" McKinney, it seems that the average intelligence of the Georgia delegation has just skyrocketed. What will be the net effect of losing these people from Congress?

I'm thrilled as a American that Cindy will be joining us in the private sector.

It's just soooooo sad to see her go.

I guess that the story of this primary in Georgia is:
“We're no longer electing lunatics!”

I’m just sorry I moved back to Atlanta too late to vote against McKinney...

Oops... My correct apostrophes and open/close quote looked right in preview, but not when posted.

That's what I get for being pedantic about punctuation...

The next effect will be a double-post.

I was just upset that I didn't get to vote against either of them! I happen to be one of the few thousand people who live in the city of Atlanta AND in DeKalb County, which means that I am not in Cynthia's district (She has 99% of DeKalb in her district). A nice bit of gerrymandering there? Either way, I'm happy as can be.

What's lost in the comments so far that Bob Barr is joining the private sector as well. The people of Georgia have not only sent a left-wing nut job packing, they've sent her right wing counterpart home as well! Well done by Atlanta and its suburbs. Thankfully, I live in John Lewis's district (mere miles away from McKinney's former district).

I'm so glad Bob Barr is out of there. He was an embarrassment to sentient beings everywhere.

MetaFilter: We are pedantic about punctuation.

Punctuation is the thin end of the wedge. Poor punctuation leads to an obsession with Cosmo which leads ineluctably to the unnatural love of sheep, chickens and the lower vertebrates. It can also lead to getting hit about the head and neck by sadistic grade shool teachers.

Congrats to Atlanta. They were the Al D'Amatos of Georgia.

You get rid of Barr, but you still get Linder. Six in the hand, half a dozen in the other.
posted by alou73 at 7:06 AM on August 21, 2002

not quite, alou73 -- Linder is quieter... and, thus much more dangerous, than the blustering blowhard types like Barr and Gingrich, who rise to quickly to know how to manage their success. Linder is much better for the republicans, and they know it.

But when the votes are counted on the House floor, I don't see too much difference.

barr: reactionary buffoon, ineffective legislator, merely a source of embarrassment.
linder: stealthilly reactionary, effective legislator, might actual get laws passed.

i'm with dwivian. in a couple of months, we might actually start to miss the annoying blather of little bobby barr.

Good lord, Macboy, have you actually looked at that site you posted?

Reliable sources have disclosed that the McKinney campaign plans to uproot Majette for Congress yard signs in the northern areas of the 4th District. This activity will take place between 12 AM and 6 AM in these final days leading up to the primary.

Yeah, right. Come on, let's keep this focused on facts and not obvious disinfo, ok?

Absolutely alou73, there is no difference on the floor. They're both extremely conservative.

However, Barr is no Gingrich. Gingrich was a Republican liberals loved to hate. The mere mention of his name prompted liberals to donate gobs of money. But Gingrich's lunacy wasn't as harmful as Barr's. Barr's remarks were vile, slanderous, and ammunition to too many right-wingers out there.

I'd be okay with a Gingrich-type up there on the Hill. But Barr is too dangerous to leave on a soapbox. I'd rather have a stealth Linder. He'll be beatable in 4 years. (His district will become more liberal thanks to Atlanta's suburb growth.)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Find me a social liberal/Fiscal conservative and I'll vote for them everytime.

Another thing. Although I'm glad to see McKinney go (an embarrassment to Democrats everywhere), I am saddened that Arab-Americans are losing what seems to be their only ally.

Don't get me wrong. McKinney too often said the wrong thing at the wrong time. But she is really the only member who isn't afraid to advocate for the organization of a Palestinian state, or to call for Israel to pull out of the occupied territories.

No matter how you feel about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I think it's very sad that we can only hear from one side, one opinion on the matter. Members of Congress that perhaps (as I do) feel that both sides are to blame in the conflict can't speak their opinions publically for fear of the pro-Israeli lobby and their agile grassroots efforts.
