Make spammers PAY YOU to read their junk! Neat little way to exact revenge on those spammers. Or at least scare the crap out of em anyway ;)

That should definitely reduce the server and bandwidth load of spam.

Will that work?! Most of the times, the reply-to address is just a mail bot and no one reads any replies sent there..right?

Hey, filecrave -- this is a self-link, which is clearly against the rules.

For those who are wondering how it's a self-post, the linked page goes to a post on filejunkies.com by effluo. The profile page for effluo lists a few demographics -- MSN Messenger name, birthdate -- which are strangely identical to those on the MetaFilter profile page for filecrave and the home page for filecrave (listed on his MeFi page). And to top it all off, filejunkies.com is RUN by effluo, which we just discovered is actually filecrave.

QED.

no, it probably won't work ac. in fact, you should never trust the reply-to from an unsolicited email. your reply does not scare the spammer, because they don't read replies. it does, however, notify the spammer that your email address is valid and being read. this just gives them more incentive to send spam to you.

escher is correct, never reply to spam. If you wish, use SpamCop to report the spam to the sender's ISP and hopefully get their account shut down.

By ignoring this message and continuing to make gratuitous self-posts on MeFi, you are agreeing to the terms set forth herein and agree to pay all fees stated... etc., etc., etc.

You know, the fact that most people think this sort of thing will work (IE Spammers use real email addresses) is one of the many reasons we're losing "the war on spam".

Speaking of the war on spam...

delfuego: do you check EVERY metafilter post for self-linking to that extent? How do you have the time and/or energy for that? :)
