I grew up listening to Pearlee Toliver, also known as the Jewel of the Dial, voicing radio ads and spinning gospel as only she could. "Why not check it out and lock it in?" [More inside.]

What I didn't know, until she died earlier this month, was that she had widespread appeal outside Monroe, Louisiana, even warranting a New York Times obituary. [open_sesame/abracadabra] Listen to the segment about Pearlee on All Things Considered, and get to know her just a bit.
