Pop stars Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue are to provide voices for a new film version of children's television classic The Magic Roundabout.
Pathe Pictures, which will distribute the film, is confident it will rival the success of the animated film Chicken Run, which earned £30m in the UK.
The new movie is being directed by Dave Borthwick of Bolex Brothers.

With regard to the actual story...blergh. NEW characters? Computer animation? Kylie 'crap shag' Minogue? I s'pose it is just another sign of aging that our childhood memories get done over like this.

On the other hand, Tom "Dr. Who" Baker & Joanna Lumley are going to be in it...which more than makes up for the crappyness...

May I echo the F.F.S. with three addenda:
1. Why can't they just shoot Robbie Williams and put him out of our misery?
2. We already have Dougal and the Blue Cat (the best parable on the evils of fascism for the under-10s I know of) and the books. The point of The Magic Roundabout (as opposed to La Manege Enchante, if you see what I mean) was Eric Thompson's odd vision (which this will no doubt dilute even further), currently unavailable according to this article apart from the glorious books. The Nigel Planer version, and no doubt this film, are a revisionist attempt to make The Magic Roundabout more like the I Love The Seventies lazy received opinion version of what it was supposed to be like. They'll be dubbing in actual "Seaman Staines" and "Roger the Cabin Boy"s to old episodes of Captain Pugwash next. Gah!
3. Real hardcore French cartoon insanity is to be found in Les Shadoks.

No I'm not involved with the film in anyway. Bolex Brothers, allthough situated in the same city as me, are direct competitors to Aardman. All the text in the post, if you care to check it, was from the BBC article.
So it's not a plug, no.

Didn't see a mention for Nigel Planer anywhere -- he narrated the new series which was made sometime in the 1990s.
What I really want to know is what happened to the proposed Mr. Benn film with John Hannah as the aforementioned and Ben Kingsley as the shop keeper.

I'm afraid to now, in case I violate something. Maybe later.
Was it the Bolex Brothers who did the ultra-low budget pixillated/animated movie about the janitors at a giant skyscraper department store, ending up blowing the whole thing up? It was on Channel 4 in the late 80s and I was too stoned at the time to pay that much attention to the credits. It's one of those things that if you know what it is you know and if not... well...
It was very good. Tom Thumb reminded me of it aesthetics-wise.
I'm more of a Quay Brothers man, myself, since they're our local surrealist stop-motion animation studio.

The myth is that they don't exist - Not sure about 'Roger the Cabin Boy' but after years of dismissing such names as an urban myth, last year I watched a Pugwash video with my 3 year old son and was amazed to hear 'Seaman Staines' mentioned.
