La Catedral de Girona - visit this Gothic masterpiece on the Costa Brava through a flash exhibition that affords a fascinating exploration of internal and external architectural details, stained glass, artwork, sepulchres, and more. Be sure to take the visit and don't miss the famous Tapestry of Creation.
(found at MeFi member Zootoon's wonderful blog by the same name - lots of great treasures there too!)

The bells, the bells!

Wow, that was wonderful, like having the cathedral to yourself on a rainy day. A bit scary too - those chanting monks really know how to chill a poor Jewish boy's medula.

Thanks, madamjujujive - I'm having these words printed and embossed, btw! :)

Awesome. Wouldn't you love to travel back in time and tell the craftsmen that someday their work would be part of a Macromedia Flash website?

I've been there!

An amazing experience. After a few days exploring Barcelona on the cheap, my wife and I got jumped in the Barri Gotic. Bunch of 20 somethings grabbed us from behind and wrestled us to the ground, right in front of a cathedral, in plain view of many other people!. They pawed us for our wallets and watches. Luckily, we weren't wearing any, and after a harrowing five seconds, they let us up and ran away. We were quite shaken, and decided to take a day trip to a quieter town.

We ended up in Girona. Girona is a very beautiful medieval town with a fairy tale look and friendly inhabitants. Neither of us had heard of it before, but a couple of days there turned out to be some of the most rewarding of our trip to Spain.

Thanks so much for the link. Brought back many good memories.

jeff-o-matic, I am very sorry that you had this bad experience in my hometown (and in my barrio). At least you enjoyed the rest of the day! Barcelona isn't a insecure city, at least it is very rare to have shootings and killings, but unfortunately, little robberies like these are becoming more and more usual...

Did you know that Girona is the city with the higher level of quality of live of Spain?

The Cathedral and the Call Jueu (old jewish neighborhood) are just amazing!

BTW, technically, you can't really say that Girona is in the "Costa Brava" (that means Brave or Wild Coast), check the Costa Brava website for a better understanding of the tourism offerings (but loose about the exact location of the Costa Brava), and this one for a complete (and less intrusive text only) explanation of what is the Costa Brava. Both links are in English.

One of life's greatest moments is to leave some city's crowded sidewalks and enter for a moment into the cool, peaceful nave of an ancient cathedral.
Check out the dreamlike claustro.

Wow, thanks madamjujujive. Truly flattering coming from you. I should point out my blog is in Catalan though there are titles in English. Girona is indeed a great place, as Lance Armstrong can bear witness to as he's been living in the old quarter there for a few years now.

Very cool. The Tapestry of Creation is the one in Peri Rossi's Ship of Fools, I think.

jeff-o-matic, samelborp and zootoon - thanks for the input - always good to get the perspective of people who are or have been on the scene. Thanks for the clarification about the Costa Brava too samelborp - I've never been, thus my ignorance, but I hope to rectify that sometime soon.

111, I particularly liked the cloister pics too.

Kafkaesque you get points for making that association - I will have to look into that. I was quite taken with the tapestry, tho I surely don't know much about medieval tapestries...the only other ones that come to mind are the famous Unicorn tapestries, found in the Cloisters in New York and Musée de Cluny in Paris.

And crunchland, you definitely get points for your ability to make cathedral-related architectural puns!
