You may have seen the PSAs with Nick & Norm (So it is alright to support terrorism, a little?) Now the Marijuana Policy Project in their War on Drug Czar has released a parody. [QT, Real, or WMP]

I've long been a fan of the folks at MPP. Their snail-mail newsletter is a valuable source for information about the status of legal and legislative efforts. They are as brilliant as ever. This ad addresses only one aspect of the War on (Some) Drugs, but it covers that point cogently, completely, and with humor. I laughed out loud.

As domestic production of good pot becomes more and more common, the rationale for including it in the WoSD becomes weaker.

Full disclosure: I smoked pot regularly for many years, and eventually got bored with it, and haven't smoked in about five years. I am pretty sure I will never run afoul of the pot laws, but I'm still offended that the US government chooses to pour so many resources down this stupid hole of a campaign.

Since the server seems to be slashdotted, here's the transcript.

NICK: Okay, maybe a little of the money I spend on marijuana supports terror and violence.

NORM: Right.

NICK: And that's because marijuana is illegal.

NORM: Exactly.

NICK: When I buy a beer, that doesn't support terror, because beer is legal, right?

NORM: Now you got it.

NICK: So you're saying if we make marijuana legal and regulate it like beer, it wouldn't support violence.

NORM: Did I say that?

Marijuana prohibition. Harmless?

Server seems fine to me, but here is a mirror. [QT 1.82MB]

This commercial is brilliant. It makes the point clearly that I've felt was the major flaw in the argument all along... that it's a combination of demand for weed, and a shady bunch of folks being the only ones able to produce it in quantity due to current drug laws.

Why should I make a full change, when the government is half responsible?

I've never done pot. Which surprises no one around here.

But I just can't countenance what our white-knuckled clutching of bad policy has done to many developing nations, not to mention our own inner-cities, prisons, and court houses.

We've kept precious few from trying the drug... and in the process, have turned millions into "criminals".

*ack*

hehehehe that's awesome. But, to nitpick, the guy on the right is wearing too much makeup. Thanks for the link, Steve@. Something we can agree on!

oh and for the record -- love the stuff. Not smoking it this semester though -- learning French. Can't remember shit with a baseline THC level.

there's a PARODY now?

do you mean that the original wasn't a bad SNL skit but an actual PSA?

Seriously, until the second half I assumed the original ad was a parody itself. I mean "so I should believe it because it's true?" is straight out of a parody of the persistent lack of actual evidence that pot is evil. This was good, though, if almost unnecessary since the original was so bad
