Cat-Scan.com

Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

Oh, excuse me, but this is a duplicate post. But why does that previous post have tomorrow's date on it? Could it be from July 14th, 1999? And if that's the earliest surviving post in the archives, then that must mean...
Happy Birthday, MetaFilter!
a day early, but I thought we needed time to collect 1216 greeting comments, and take up a PayPal collection to buy Matt something cool for under 30 bucks.

I'll be the first to jump on and say, "Happy Freakin' Birthday, MetaFilter!!" If it weren't for you, I wouldn't waste so much time! Or get any news. Or have my own home page now.
So seriously, a million thanks Matt for taking the time to design, launch, and maintain this site, and opening it to all comers. Thank you.

Yep, well done Matt. Look at how far this site has come in a year, 1200 members and growing!
It's also got me to be more creative at work, I now have to come up with more varied excuses why my productivity seems to be falling ("well there's more posts to get through on MeFi nowadays" just won't wash).

As for me having only been signed up here for about 2 weeks, I'll say it go. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ya old MetaFilter, you. (And many more.. on Channel 4, and Scooby Doo on Channel 2.) Sorry, I couldn't resist. And well-done everybody.

Don't you hate guys who sing the last line of 'Happy Birthday' in harmony?
posted by baylink at 1:32 PM on July 13, 2000

I'm the kind who sings the final "YOOOOOU" with a Cecil-the-Sea-Sick-Sea-Serpent-style up-one-octave flourish on the end. You wanna make something of it? (Note to self: no goofy card for baylink this year)

I have to fight my musical instincts *not* to sing it in harmony. it's such a big obvious hole.

anyway, happy birthday (in melody), mefi. :)

I'm usually laughing so hard at everybody else purposefully singing silly before we get to the last line that I couldn't sing harmony on it if I wanted to.

"Y'say it's yer birthday! Bah-bum-dada-bing! bum! It's my birthday too yeah! Bah-bum-dada-bing! bum!"

So uh.. who won?

I like to sing it like that stork does in the beginning of Dumbo.. When he gets carried away on the mail pole.

Also, what happened to This? I thought it was a great idea. I also noticed Mathowie posted his 500th comment yesterday, another landmark!

You mean worth30bucks?Without the "s"? The extra "s" didn't work, at least for me. I have no idea, I didn't know it was there. Hrmm... I wonder.

Aw shucks. Unfortunately these guys own fiveanddime.com but they ain't doing anything with it.

It's pretty obvious come to think of it. Create a website with an easy to remember domain name and hunt the 'Net for anything that's relatively cheap to buy. Link to it. Maybe make deals with the companies that you'll work them into a shopping cart system of some sort. Provide for people easy access to potential compulsory expenditures. Anything from Archie McPhee to ZBS. The ultimate online five and dime. ..well more like five or ten dollars as opposed to cents. Inflation, y'know. =)

I'm surprised no one has done this yet.

Since I'm so darn lame, and because I'm deprived of sleep, here's some crazy July 14 happenings!

Congratulations to Matt for Metafilter's continued success and the users who keep it a source of unending amazement for me. You guys rock my face.
