The non-serious voice of Scientology? Scientology apparently used to have a sense of humor. Make sure to check out the cover art! (via boing boing)

Scientology never had a sense of humour. LRon bitchslapped this little newsrag almost from the get-go:

Due to a recent order issued by Mr. Hubbard that all members of the H.A.S.I. should in no way communicate with or be in possession of the ABERREE, some of our sources of information have been cut off. We will "carry on, though wounded," however.

That was in Issue 8. Issue 8 is quite the read -- a lot of criticism of $cieno's money-grubbing habits.

I've asked this before when Scientology has come up on Mefi: do we have any Scientologists in residence who can give us some context on this? I'm really curious, not trying to trick anyone into "outing" themselves. Is there stuff in your religion that you joke about, or is everyting beyond the pale like this was apparently?

PST, I've always wondered the same thing. Lord knows my Lutheran parents have a slew of jokes, and an entire comedy industry rests on the shoulders of self-deprecating Catholics and Jews.

Are there any acceptable "John Travolta and Tom Cruise walk into a bar" jokes?

Acceptable ones, not obvious ones.

I made up an innocuous one about Hubbard's favorite soup being "clear consomme" once, but

A)It was very bad indeed
B)I am not a Scientologist, so it doesn't really count, and
C)it was very bad indeed.

John Travolta and Tom Cruise walk into a bar with a poodle under one arm, and a two foot salami under the other. John lays the poodle on the table. Bartender says, "I suppose you won't be needing a drink." Tom says...

That is. Hysterical.

And when I inevitably become a rock star, "All Aboard the Poop Ship" is going to be the name of my greatest hits compilation.
