From the Guidelines:

What makes a good thread post to MetaFilter?

A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others.

As a first-time poster or new member of MetaFilter, take a look at the older posts to get a feel for what constitutes a good link. Look at the links that carry 10 or 20 comments to see what everyone is talking about. Is the link you're about to post provocative enough to show to everyone? If so post away.

A good thread values uniqueness over novelty.

There is no interesting content on the pages. The links are to a band webpage and a tv show webpage, neither of which are obscure or otherwise uncommon. Terrible post all around, and SandeepKrishnamurthy's recent transgressions don't excuse you.

Yeah, I have to really question this thread.

How is this not just PR for this particular band? And further, who really cares, anyway? Grab a TV guide.

Great album though, picked it up just yesterday. Not really a CD buyer either.

I should make a GWAR post. I'm inspired.

Thanks for the link Beholder. I hadn't heard about this yet.

Alls i can say is the White Stripes must have the best. publicist. ever.

Hey! As long as everybody's transgressing and this post is gonna be deleted n all, yo Mr. Letterman? My band is avaible for hire. We could do your show - tho we'd really prefer it if you could be as funny as John Stewart!

A lot of people might find this interesting, including me.

I'm amazed that people have the time to play Metafilter nanny...

The Michael The: Since your email address apparently isn't working, here's what I was going to send you:

If you're going to pee all over a thread, considering taking it to MeTa first.

Bitching and moaning in the midst of a conversation is just not the right way to handle complaints like this.

Plug Elephants?
Like Republicans?
Does that mean we can turn this into another Bush Bashing thread?

Frankly, I appreciate an opportunity to talk about Conan O'Brien on MetaFilter. Like, why didn't Chris Elliot warn Andy Richter about doing a sitcom on FOX? And why don't they just start doing a series of sketches titled "By the Year 2010" and stop trying to come up with 'new ideas' that suck?

I thought four straight appearances on Conan was interesting news, that not everyone had heard about yet, and that's why I made the post. If I had not already known about this, I would have certainly wanted someone here to bring it to my attention.

Conan comes on past my bed time. I think you should only post about TV shows that come on early enough for me to watch.

I appreciated it. MeFi is many things, and sometimes just a notice about an event (a new trailer, a new show, etc) leads to a great discovery.

Damn, just as I thought their godawful 15 minutes might be over.

while this might not be what Metafilter is all about (what is Metafilter all about again?), this lil bit of timely information has made my night.

My Tivo's night, that is.

Thanks for the heads-up, Beholder.

I like Conan. Has anyone seen his skits from 2002 where he "discovers" and "promotes" a boy-band called the Dudes, and produces a video of them performing "The Awesome Song"? Very funny. Both he and Letterman excel at these little films; I wish they would do more of them.

/Conan-hijack.

PS: You know, we had a Radiohead post only 3 days ago that got over 40 responses (some of them mine), and it was just announcing the name of the new album. At least the Stripes post announced something that was fairly out of the ordinary. (And I'm more of a Radiohead than a White Stripes fan, myself.) Didn't Matt say something a while back along the lines of, we will always have some "this movie is coming out; what do you think?" posts, and we should all just deal? (Apologies if this is wrong.)

I'm so sorry. Meant that to go in the MeTa thread. Doh.

I actually really like the Stripes. I didn't, even after the "punk rock kitties", until I heard "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground". Now I'm a believer.

They remind me of the lo-fi bands of my college years--Billy Childish redux.

thanks Beholder, i would never have known about this otherwise. i don't read the tv guide and normally only watch buffy and masterpiece theatre 8-)

The video for their new single threatens to give me seizures every time I see it... not that I watch MTV all that much... I was just in France for a week and the only English being spoken (sung) on tv was MTV... *shrug*

I like the Stripes though... and think this is a valid thread, FWIW.

Coca-Cola will be appearing on television, for the entire week, starting tonight. The brand is promoting their new drink called Coca-Cola.

Why the f**k is this band all over the place suddenly? Open up Time mag - White Stripes. Open up Newsweek - White Stripes. Open up MeFi - White Stripes.

I smell a meteoric rise followed by a career-ending fall.

I saw the White Stripes two blessed weeks ago in glasgow, if they are not the finest band in the world at this point in time, then something is badly wrong.
This poster is doing you a favour alerting you to their greatness, in times to come, you will search out the googlecache of this page and heave a nostalgic sigh that this is the place where your love of the stripes began..........

Or I'll thrown on some Cannibal Corpse right now. Much more easily listening, IMO. Now, where's my copy of Gallery of Suicide...

I love em.

But - here's the looming horror . . .

Will other bands/labels decide to do the same thing?

Can you imagine a WHOLE ENTIRE WEEK of n*synch??
A whole week of Pink?
A whole week of Creed?
AN ENTIRE MONTH OF JOHN TESH??

I hope this was a "Conan is a huge Stripes fan so this is a one time deal" type of deal

yeesh!

thanx beholder. i appreciate the post. the hall pass monitors on mefi are what have really killed mefi for me. too many people trying to decide "what's an appropriate FPP post" and if it's worthy enough. i like these kinds of posts and this is one of the reasons why i visit mefi. i'll pass on the thousanth post about dubya and iraq and all of the other bullshit politics posts.

Yeah, I just saw the first show. I had never seen Conan before, so I'm curious whether he always has his musical guest perform last.

I thought the song was great, but if you're not a fan of the band, I doubt this performance will change your opinion.

Yes Jack, we understand that you are so talented you work wonders with an awful drummer. Please drop the gimmick and find someone good now. It doesn't work so well without all the post-production to drown her out. James Wormwood will be free when Max returns, how about using him this week?

Although, the bodyguard (groupie? long lost brother?) who stood there holding his hat was priceless. It was worth staying up just for him.
posted by Gary at 1:47 AM on April 23, 2003

Beholder, yes, the musical guest on Conan always comes last. I think that's the late night standard, actually (also true w/ Letterman and Leno, I think).

For what it's worth, Comedy Central re-broadcasts the previous night's Conan show at 1pm and 7pm eastern.

I see that the metapolice are still in force and have recruited new members.

My $0.02 has alway been this: If you don't like it - leave it. Matt will delete where he feels a need to - and I've been deleted a few times.

Since this thread has survived, may I point out a largely-inappropriate, yet somehow resonant parallel to John and Yoko's stint hosting the Mike Douglas Show? Husband and Wife, mailgned-as-"no talent"-female-collaborator to misunderstood rocker.
OK, a little thin, but you take what you can get with "Important" bands. I think it's a pretty great move kicking off the summer touring and record-buying season in the States by setting up camp in meida capital NYC (this after their show at Hammerstein Ballroom with Loretta Lynn the previous week).
BTW, anyone catch what they played last night?
posted by chandy72 at 9:21 AM on April 23, 2003

Gary - I've found Meg's drumming to be fine for the songs they do play. Yeah, she's no Krupa (hell, she's no David Lovering), but I find the simple rhythms a nice counter to Jack's over-the-top playing on "Elephant". Admittedly, it can get a little pedantic at times, "Ball and Biscuit", especially. However, for the real barn-burners on the album - "Black Math" and "Hypnotize", it works. If you want *truly* horrible drumming, check out "Foot Foot" by the Shaggs, here (click on the "foot foot" graphic at the top.

"Yes Jack, we understand that you are so talented you work wonders with an awful drummer. Please drop the gimmick and find someone good now. It doesn't work so well without all the post-production to drown her out. - Gary"

at last..someone else finally realized she stinks! yeah she's hot, but you can actually watch her lips move while she's playing...

While I would never call the White Stripes a punk band, there's a little bit of that in their music, and musical craftsmanship is not what punk is about. I'm sure the drummer for White Lion is more talented, but the music he plays still sucks.
posted by Beholder at 11:53 AM on April 23, 2003

But there's a little bit of other genres in their music that would benefit from having a better drummer, or no drummer at all. I don't mind her on the albums (for some songs it really does work), but playing live you start to wonder why he bothered bringing her along. On SNL they played slow songs and she just sat there looking around for most of it.
(If it helps, there will always be a spot in the second best band in America for her.)
