Well, not cancelled, but going online only.

Guess no one was looking forward to strip searches and random deportations...

*winces as caps jab into eyes*

I guess it only makes sense for a Web Awards ceremony to be, well, on the web.

Sure didn't make sense the last six years...

With concerns about traveling heightened by global events...

The terrorists have won.

The Webby Awards haven't been relevant since about 1998. The list of winners reads almost like a parallel version of the web; you're left wondering what these websites are and how come you've never heard of them.

The Webby Awards were at one time relevant?

Do you really think people didn't want to show up because of SARS or just because the Webbys mean nothing and folks just couldn't be bothered attending.

Hey wasn't Patrick Stuart a judge on a previous webby show or something? Didn't they make him look at the Stile Project?

How can this not be an important and relevant show? I say next we get Madonna to judge the "best furry" category and we show goatse to Steve Gutenberg.

I hate the vague. Are they talking about SARS? Are they talking about the war? Are they talking about US airport security measures and searches? Are they talking about the death of the airline industry? What up? Someone from the Webby's spill, please.

That being said, giving out an internet award at a Academy Awards-style fiesta just seems wrong, so I'm glad they're changing it.

Considering how the Oscars still insist on taking over three hours even after Nine Eleven & Gulf War II, it's good to see that the Webbys are being kind to humanity by endeavouring to take absolutely no time at all.

What I read between the lines was that there wasn't the dollars to put on a show. Blaming "all that is going on" is a cop out.

And of nominees... I would think there would be more people blaming "all that is going on" than, "I can't afford to go to SF for an irrelevent award show."

They had also extended their deadline for entries by a month or two. Seems like nobody cares about the Webbys anymore...

First cool site of the year and now this. It's all downhill from here.

Rather sad I think - a symbol of the end of a unique era. I miss the freshness of the web in its early days! I miss the bubble!

Aside from the specific issue of the Webbies and to the point of a large event cancellation, this is troublesome to me...I was just at a trade show that used to draw 12 to 14 thousand attendees, but was closer to 8,000 this year. Reasons for not attending ran the gamut: SARS - no one from southeast Asia came; war-related - the French and Mexicans didn't come, apparently due to concern they wouldn't be welcome and protest over the war; economy woes - lack of both financial sponsorships and attendance because companies are tightening priorities and making tough choices.

Whatever the reasons for the Webbies and other reduced or canceled events, this is terrible news for travel, trade show and hospitality industries, as well as the cities that benefit from them. This economy sucks.

For all those with negative things to say about the Webbies (sounds like all of you), is there any alternative? Should the most a web designer who creates a fantastic site hope for be a link on Metafilter?

I am goddam sick of American public and events organizers shitting their pants over unsubstantiated and inconsequential fears. I am sick of the "better safe than sorry" philosophy that has pervaded every known facet of modern existence. Never in American history has such rigidity become de riguer. I thought we were fighting a war on terrorism. If that's the case, then we can start with the self-imposed bullshit we heap upon our fragile shoulders.

testify bro!
but the stench reaches much deeper! why the very fact that certain sites are overlooked year after year, could that be due to fear of what left-wing-pinko-drug-addled-abortion-on-every-table liberal anti-war bilge the webmaster may spew in his acceptance speech? they meet in toney spas at midnight to map out their dastardly machinations in hopes of preventing what would amount to a conservative holocaust - quonsar and his elephant, center stage, mic before them, in front of an audience of millions. even spiro agnew gators in his grave.

What's really ironic is reading these self-congratulatorily dissing posts and knowing how much hard work and good intentions have gone into every year of the Webbys.
