Groom Tries To Keep Pimp Hand Strong With Dowry Demand - Gets Arrested A bride who got the police to arrest her bridegroom has become something of a celebrity in India. Nisha Sharma, 21, called the police after her father was asked for more dowry money just minutes before her wedding ceremony.

Sheesh nothing. In some segments of Indian society women still get murdered over dowry issues.

Dowry Deaths: In India, it is estimated that more than 5,000 women are killed each year because their in-laws consider their dowries inadequate. A tiny percentage of their murderers are brought to justice.

She's a very lucky woman - the groom could have waited until after the wedding. Her family could have refused to back her up. Yes, she was courageous, but she also happened to be very fortunate in her circumstances.

OK...here's a question.... since dowries are illegal in India, and the guy asked for more dowry money... will her parents get into trouble with the law too? I mean, shouldn't they also be arrested for giving a dowry in the first place?

Yes, she was courageous, but she also happened to be very fortunate in her circumstances.

Isn't the risk involved what made her so courageous in the first place?

I'm really proud of her, especially her willingness and desire to be a role model for other young women in similar situations. It takes people like her to make societal changes.
