Hello, sailor!

Is President Bush a Homo? "Even our least vigilant Republican social commandos have noticed that Mr. Bush has been peppering his otherwise delightful litany of patriotic jingoism and pleasantly embroidered CIA-intelligence recaps with the effeminate mating call 'fabulous'--three giddy syllables that are tantamount to coyly cooing, 'Hello, sailor!'"

Yes, he is.
A Monica will not do.
It must be a Michael.

"Dr. Condoleezza Rice is an honest, fabulous person, and America is lucky to have her service. Period." - Bush today, asked why Condi is still around.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But don't go calling him one or he'll get mad and do something dumb to prove his manhood - like attacking North Korea.

Man, if Bush is gay, that's going to lower the reputation of homosexuals everywhere.

Bwaaaa-haha!! Oh well, so much for me going Nelly. You can have him - we don' want him...

So, gay male MeFiers, if Bush WERE gay, would you send that "fabulous" right back at him?

Well, it's not like Laura ever puts out.

This reminds me of Robert Klein's "Six Clean Words You Can Say Anywhere" routine, where he points out that men never use the word "adore," as illustrated by this conversation:

"Is he straight or is he gay?"
"I don't know. I think he's gay."
"How do you know?"
"Well, he said 'adore'."
"That does it. Let's get the son of a bitch!"

Every time I hear or see the phrase "Hello, sailor!" I immediately flash back to...

Commandment 12592
Oh ye who go about saying unto each other: "Hello sailor":
Dost thou know the magnitude of thy sin before the gods?
Yea, verily, thou shalt be ground between two stones.
Shall the angry gods cast thy body into the whirlpool?
Surely, thy eye shall be put out with a sharp stick!
Even unto the ends of the earth shalt thou wander and
Unto the land of the dead shalt thou be sent at last.
Surely thou shalt repent of thy cunning.

This is kind of baffling to me. The Betty Bowers site and most of you guys are using "gay" as an epithet, meant to humiliate Bush for some perceived lack of masculinity. Since when is it acceptable to bash someone by joking about their sexual preferrence, and why the double standard?

not even close.

It's meant to humiliate Bush by associating him with a group he doesn't approve of. That's the power of 'gay.' Straight people, especially straight people who have strange feelings toward Brad Pitt or lime green thongs, react with fear and anger when they get pointed out as being possibly gay. So really, this isn't a double standard, it's just an attempt to use Bush's own prejudices against him.

Could you imagine a press conference where this question got asked? Bush would have one of those "You can't handle the truth!!" freak-outs.

preview: quonsar, you are a strange, strange man.

/\/\/\/: I was wondering why this post was conjuring up images of walls with cyclops-shaped holes in them. Thanks for reminding me.

Mm-hmm. Homos, per the fpp. So it's OK to throw the word homo around now? Thanks for the memo.

CunningLinguist (and kirkaracha) I gotta admit, as soon as I read the word "fabulous" in today's article about that, I thought exactly the same thing... is he or isn't he?

jfuller, I think the memo you missed was the one on ironic uses of language.

Ah. The way we used to use it in the fourth grade.

jfuller: Would it be overly cynical of me to think you object more to the association of the word 'homo' with Bush then to the word 'homo' itself? It's clearly being used in a ironic way to color Bush's own perspective of homosexuals.

God damn it. We can't smoke fags, we can't act gay when we're happy, we can't be feeling a bit queer, and we can't wear purple or own anything with a rainbow on it. This aggression will not stand, man! A line must be drawn, and I'm drawing it here.

did you go to the site? It's making fun of crazy christian fundies more than it's making fun of bush. Betty Bowers, the best christian on earth, uses out-of-date epithets and has strange backwards prejudices that mean that she reacts against normal healthy relationships by declaring her own superiority and insisting on the dirty nasty gross-out nature of those that are different from her.

The little Shrub is at least gay friendly. Look at how far gay unions have come while under his watch. Yes, yes, he pays lip service by publicly condemning the issue, but we all know how much he lies. ;-P
