Great music. Great visuals. But the content sucked.

I think it's Nina Simone, but which song?

Okay, can someone verify whether this is a joke? Because Kim Jong-Il is truly bizarre, but I'm not sure he's capable of being this bizarre. Once he developed an obsession with a sexy Japanese magician and kept calling her at all hours, telling her to come to NK in S&M gear.

Hee-hee, and Nina to boot.

Young-Hae Chang does have a distinctive style.

Speaking of seduction in North Korea:
Ply your date with a little adder liquor, and you've definitely got yourself a digestive, festive, and suggestive romantic evening ahead.

For now, I'd say North Korea isn't ready to bet the farm that the export of spirits will single-handedly rescue their economy.

Serendipitously enough, I sent out Margie Day's Take Out Your False Teeth, Daddy--considered, at least by this guy in Australia, one of
The Ten Dirtiest Rhythm & Blues Records of All Time--on the spm3 list this very morning. Great minds stink alike.

I can't take this seriously, sorry. If it's trying to be effective and/or persuasive, it would have worked better on me in a non-flash presentation. Something static, and without the music.

...Was it serious?
posted by phylum sinter at 7:45 PM on November 6, 2003

I'm on a couple glasses of wine and I'm perfectly content to kick back and listen to the music. I'll have to read the message later.

Even so, it is flashing in the backround and only downside, as with most Flash presentations of the sort is there is no cue when the thing will end. That there is the usability guru in me.

But still, this won't stop me from enjoying the groove.

North Korea: You'll come for the cunnilingus, but you'll cum for the communists!

Samsung means "to come"

I remeber the last time you posted something from the Young-Hae Chang site. I had some friends over the next night and made them sit with me and watch my favorites. Good stuff, but kind of a triple post. Then again, it is nice to know when new stuff is up as well.

So is the artist redoing a speech by a North Korean ( doubtful ) or parodying a South Korean viewpoint ( minority viewpoint, most likely ) of North Korea as a Utopia or just fucking around? Anyone?
Entertaining, either way. It would be cool to have a sexual utopia instead of a socialist utopia. They might not have food, but they got what they got they eat off their naked partners. Make every rice grain count.

Just double-checking here: the music was from Nina Simone, See Line Woman? What album? Is the rest of the album along the same gumbo blues lines?

I want that music.

Also, I got a good laugh from the Flash content. It was pleasantly silly. :)

Young-Hae Chang's flash hypnotizes me in a way I can't quite explain. After watching Samsung Means "To Come", I was literally surprised to realize I was still at my desk at work... like I had just snapped out of a dream.

I only watched about forty seconds and am not qualified to comment, but as usual I will: sexy, enticing, a tour de force.

It starts with:
The following is a text that North Korea's dear leader Kim Jong-Il asked Young Hae-Chang Heavy Industries to present.
Soooo, North Korea's President says they are superior to the South because of their oral prowess!!?? okie-dokie...that guy is twisted. (Stop the presses!)

Young-Hae Chang is not only an effective animator; he is also a very good musician. His animation is so well synchronized with the music, he must have has some musical training. It is super tight. He at the very least he has an excellent ear.

Nice piece, though See-Line Woman, a staple of my iTunes rotation, will never be the same for me. As to the validity of the claims in the piece, while I doubt its origins as a real speech, it would make sense that way. Thanks to their dreadful economy, the North Koreans, are starving. So what do you eat when you can't eat food?

Stavros, how about some Korean pick-up lines?

Hey, baby!
posted by planetkyoto at 2:35 AM on November 7, 2003

I've never been much of a pickup artist, unfortunately, planetkyoto. I tend to leave that sort of thing to random quantum flux, with varying success.

On-topic : yes, she's been discussed repeatedly here, but a reminder when new content appears is welcome.

The work is extraordinary.

It is so simple, so elegant, and just plain well done.

I see work such as this and then feel ashamed that I sometimes consider myself creative.

Can s0me0ne explain why the artist uses 0s f0r Os? Is it a f0rm 0f K0rean l33t-speak?

I heard the original (?) recording of this song (remixed) in the soundtrack of a movie called "the General's daughter" (with John Travolta), whose soundtrach was way more interesting then the movie itself.
The songs title was mentioned as Sea Lion woman (lyrics and info) and the Digital Tradition Folk Music Database states the following about the song:

"Sea Lion Woman", sung by Christine and Katherine Shipp, was recorded for the Library of Congress by Herbert Halpert in Byhalia, Mississippi in May of 1939. It is available on the CD "A Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings" selected and annotated by Stephen Wade, Rounder CD 1500. The liner notes mention that the actual title of this playground song might be See [the] Lyin' Woman, C-Line Woman, or Sea Lion Woman."

Interestingly this Shipp sisters' original version is contained in the "She began to lie" track [4.8 Mbs mp3] linked to in Nelson DeMille's (author of the book "General's Daughter" was based on) website. This is a remix but still interesting...

Somehow I managed to miss all previous references to Young-Hae Chang. The work is stunningly brilliant!

OK, I guess the Cunnilingus part should have warned me, but please hama7: a NSFW would have been appreciated. Reading text at work that happens to be about sexuality is fine, but my screen flashing SEX TOYS, ORGASM etc is more than even I can get away with.

That said, very cool link! I hadn't seen any of it before, either, and have bookmarked for future.

talos, you may be interested in this 1939 Lomax recording of "Sea Lion" from the American Memory collection.

Oh, and I'd like to second, third, fourth, fifth the wonderfulosity of Young-Hae Chang.

I think it's a reference to the old L0pht Heavy Industries, which was folded into @Stake some years back. If memory serves, L0pht used the same font and the same white-letters-on-black-background.
