Thanks sarge. These are great!! Now I just have to figure out how to explain to the boss why I spent all morning downloading mp3s instead of updating our database.

Sweet link-o-rama, sarge.

Anybody know wget well enough to help me download ALL the mp3s linked to on that page?!
posted by maniactown at 12:11 PM on December 4, 2003

matador records offers free mp3 downloads, as does pitchfork. Granted, most of these dl's are far more mainstream than what I've seen on sarge's link, but hey, they're free and most of 'em aren't half bad. Shoot! While I'm at it, I might as well mention Rainbow Quartz Records, the home of some of the best jangle pop garage band 60's influenced bands out there. And then there's Insound which offers up a cornucopia of sweet and not so sweet sounds.

Very cool to see Mr. Airplane Man on there. Listen to Mr. Airplane Man. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The mp3 seems to be down though... so... um... buy the CD? I can't find any mp3s of theirs anywhere. Oh nuts.

This seems to be doing it, in case anybody is interested:

wget -r -H -l2 --no-parent -A.mp3 -R.html,.gif,.txt --follow-tags=a -nd http://www.radio.plus.com/index.html

Find out more about the fantastic wget utility here, and while you're at it check out the growing catalog of Pandora Records titles in Ogg Vorbis format for free!.

Very cool. Some excellent bands there.

I was amazed that there was a LIARS track as I tried to get that very song for my blogathon project (SL) and the rep at MUTE Records was pure evil to deal with. (She was the only person I spoke to (out of close to 100 agents/managers/bands/labels) for that project who acted out of the label's interest, not the band's). However, rolling over the link makes it clear that the track is on the Liars' own web site so I guess it makes sense. (Incidentally, after Liars heard through the grapevine how Mute had behaved, they apologized profusely and asked to be contacted about future projects so I've got no truck with them, just Mute.)

Anyone tempted to set up a torrent?

oh wow! thanks! i've never been to college. all this music is so off the beaten path that no one has ever heard it before!
these indie labels, like mute, are certainly only about the music. they don't seel! they are not out!

oh wow! thanks! i've never been to college.

So, by that logic, anything anyone could have found anywhere before is not a viable discussion topic for MetaFilter. We could make a MetaTalk post about it, but someone else might have already pondered it on their own, so why bother?

the aloha, what would you have done if the link would have been to paula abdul and phil collins tracks? shit on everyone for liking popular music? i get the impression from your post that you would have had to find some way to open your condescending mouth about the topic, regardless of the fact that you really had nothing to say. pathetic.

thanks again, sgt.

What is a torrent?
posted by tr33hggr at 2:18 PM on December 5, 2003

This is cool, but nearly all the tracks from bands I already know, I already found online elsewhere - either at their sites, or their labels, or maybe at epitonic.com or pitchfork or delusions of adequacy etc. Lots of less popular bands put up at least a few teaser tracks somewhere, and they tend to spread. (Epitonic is great for picking up a few tracks and then getting suggestions for what else you might find interesting, by the way.)
posted by mdn at 2:36 PM on December 5, 2003

oh, duh, I just realized the tracks aren't hosted by the site - they're links to other places on the web. So no wonder I already found them :).

So these mp3s... they vibrate?

Seriously... this is EXACTLY what the major labels should be doing with their artists.

But then again, if you enjoy nothing but top 40 radio, this particular case wouldn't interest you anyway.

The Peel Sessions albums are hard to find in the US, so this is very cool... if only all the links worked.

I listen to mostly jazz and electronic music... I only wish that the major jazz/classical labels would do something like this... like Blue Note or ECM...

Seriously... this is EXACTLY what the major labels should be doing with their artists.

major labels have top 40 radio to spread the "singles" and get people to go buy the whole album. I hate top 40 music, so I can't believe they replay the same songs over and over, but I've noticed that when I find a few new good tracks online, I rotate them over and over in my computer jukebox, until I get around to buying the CD. So it's the same thing, just a different taste in music which makes personalized radio a much more effective way to go about things, and hence a singles "released" online go a long way. Major labels don't need to do that, and once these bands hit the big time, they stop supplying free tracks (the most well known bands on matador only supply samples or real audio, eg -)
