As a philosophy student, I can tell you that, no, spelling doesn't count, though your professor will probably yell at you if you fail to use spell check.

As another philosophy student, I can tell you that, yes, spelling counts, and your professor will definitely yell at you if you fail to use spell check.

Speaking philosophically, I've been thinking again about finally reading Bertrand Russell's famous History of Western Philosophy [it gets a little slow here in rural Maine in the winter], and I wonder if anyone could answer this question: "Is this still considered the best one-volume history, or has it been replaced by a newer, more modern book (maybe written by, say, Stephen King or Dean Koontz)?"

lelilo: For a one volume history of philosophy I'd try Passion of the Western Mind by Richard Tarnas.

Thanks much, joseph; it looks very good, and is available in nearby libraries. I knew someone would have the answer. (I also just went over to MetaTalk, where I hang out less frequently, and found that as of two days ago you can now Ask MetaFilter these sorts of things.)

lelio - as far as I know, Russell's book is considered to be tendentious and mediocre by historians of philosopy.

I did my undergrad in philosophy at Earlham. Peter rocks. For those interestedn his homepage is dense with good stuff. Check out Nomic and his explanation of Godel's Proof
