Great link H7. The hippo mouth is a marvelous thing.

Here's a question, why do so many different kinds of animals (besides, apparently, the alligator) have ridged palates? Is it a vocal or digestive adaptation, both or none of the above?

Brad: Just a guess: Wouldn't a soft palate mean eating risks squishing the nasal cavity and all the other stuff directly above the mouth when you eat? That doesn't seem very practical, considering when you're eating you probably want to breathe through your nose.
