They gonna let Kim do more this time?

amazingly, I was able to find the whole show already in mp3 format on the "internet." I guess some stayed up late ripping and uploading a copy they bought from disclive.

at any rate, it's completely awesome. I almost teared up while listening to "Debaser." I have tickets for a show in Atlanta in October and it's hellish having to wait. but I guess the fact that this is their first tour in 12 years puts a few months wait into perspective!

Quite a schedule. I hope/wonder if they'll squeeze a Seattle show in on 4/26

What's it being listed as on the P2P networks?

Comebacks usually do not work (remember the VU). On the other hand, don't know about you, but I am un chien andalusian, so I'm pretty happy about this. Of course, nothing could ever be compared to the fact that, next May 17th, the greatest artist of all time, Steven Patrick Morrissey, will release a new CD after seven excruciatingly long years. And to make 2004 an even greater year, in three days Moz will be on the road.

wait a minute ...the vu ?

I saw the vu comeback gig in Edinburgh and it was tremendous 111.

I want to know why they aren't coming to DC at all. Or Richmond. Or anywhere I could actually drive to.

And, sadly, I found out too late that I would be in Dublin for their show their on 12 June. If anyone has tickets they want to sell me at ridiculously high scalper rates, let me know.

sgt, I remember before the official comeback tour they did a one-shot gig in Britain (circa "Songs for Drella" or something) and I read reviews saying that several people, including journalists, were literally moved to tears because they seeing The Velvet Underground play live. I thought, man, this must have been great. Then again, upon watching the tour video and the live album, I must tell you I was disappointed. Perhaps stratospheric greatness cannot be duplicated, perhaps age and petty rivalries soured things, but overall I don't think it worked.
Now with The Pixies is a different matter, since it's basically a 90s band, so perhaps things will work. BTW the setlist from the 2nd link is good, but I cannot believe they didn't play Velouria.
Call me naive, but what does the Gregory Isaacs thing mean? Is it what I think it is?

Morrissey shmorrissey.

He never ran off with the team, the next day.

the mtv news piece says that they will be coming to the east coast after everything else is done, thecaddy. Hopefully they'll still be together by then.

Oh, I hope they add more North American dates Right now, the furthest east they're going in Canada is Winnipeg. Winnipeg is bloody well far away. We really wanted to go to Coachella to see them there, but just couldn't afford the trip right now. They are, as noted, going to be in Atlanta, but of course in October, when I am making a trip there in June. Sigh.

chicago and toronto in november apparently.

They keep adding Chicago dates, too- 4 now. Glad I got the Saturday ones, woo hoo. On checking, looks like they are sold out on T-master.com (stupid ripoff monopoly). $300.00 tickets here we come.

Morrisey with Marr though. And for that matter Marr without Morrisey, if you know what I mean.

I have enjoyed a few selections of Black without Deal, and Deal without Black, and Black without Santiago, and Santiago without Black, and...

Thanks for reminding me that I missed the boat by like 10 minutes to go see them in Calgary next week. Now I am super depressed again and I owe it all to you "sgt.serenity" if that is your real name...

All kidding aside, I am still in a deep depression on how close I was to seeing them live. I got into them in 1993, and fell in LOVE, instantly.

My first listen was friends copy of 1989's Doolittle. Right from the top, with "Debaser," I had this funny little feeling in the pit of my stomach; I remember thinking "Did I just hear that!!?!"

I didn't listen to the whole album for a couple days, I was STUCK, stuck on that one song. Gradually, I started to explore the rest of the album; "Tame", "Wave of "Mutilation"; I got to "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and my love for this record somehow increased...

anyway. I just wanted to say that I love "The Pixies", and I, uh, think they are great.

ah, can't wait for coachella -- except for the crowds.. though it's been 12 years since I've seen these cats. last show in LA was possibly the best concert I've ever been to -- 3 hours, including the vast majority of their B-sides (they did Manta Ray into Dancing the Manta Ray -- that was somethin else)

just as long as i'm not stuck here out of gas, out on the gaza strip..

Just got back from the Winnipeg show -- I've nothing to add that wasn't already said other than scalping prices would be worth it to see this.

Also, Kim, the irrepressible hellcat, SMOKED in a SMOKELESS venue. The nerve.

So, um, not to brag, but I was there for the Mpls show AND IT FUCKING ROCKED. I was worried that it would be an awkward, phoned-in sellout, but they really delivered the goods.

Heck, I had the flu when I went in, and it was gone by the end of the show. The Pixies are miracle healers.

And Kim sang 3 songs, so I guess they're sort of letting her do more.

So, I found the show on usenet, no problem and was listening to it 20 minutes later.

The sound is really nice and crisp and it was recorded well -- it doesn't sound like a normal soundboard recording so my guess is that there was someone mixing the recording sperately from doing the house mix. That said I ran it through a light master

They start off with Bone Machine and it is an eensy bit tentative to my ears, but then they get going and they do not stop. I have a dozen or so Pixies boots and this is one of the best performances. Instrumentally (aside from Kim hitting the wrong note a few times) this is the best performance I've hear on a live recording.

Mr. Francis does a really good job and I love the way he sings the song. It is apparent, though, and this might be a good or a bad thing, that he is not as *troubled* as he once was. I suppose that it is a good thing that he didn't fake the edge of sanity madness that feuled his performances back when he was Black Francis officially. That might have sounded very bad. But he sounds like a saner, more controlled, more moody singer here. That's not to say that he doesn't get the scream on. He does.

I loved the long set. 24 songs with a surprise as 'Into the White' as the final encore. No lady in the radiator here, but I love Into the White. Kim sounds.... um. a bit wasted on this version, but I have no complaints.

All in all a good show. Surprisingly good. My vote is firmly for this reunion being A Good Thing.

Just because the mention of P2P/mp3/Usenet makes me think some people may have missed it, let me point out that the second link in the FPP takes you to Sharing the Groove, where you can download the whole show in FLAC format (lossless; better than mp3) using BitTorrent.

And thank you, sgt.serenity, for that link. Best thing I've found on Metafilter in a while.
