Fascinating. Maybe I missed something, but does he describe what a Navy "housewife" actually is?

I really loved reading Tom Neale's adventures as a preface to Mark Freuenfelder's family trip to Rarotonga. Navy housewife? On an island that goes years before anyone chances by, he deserted himself to find solitude and to see if he could live on nature's bounty and wits alone.

Fascinating. Is there any way this could be done today? Are there still remote enough islands?

[this is good]

It is going to take me a while to read this. Nice find.

I read it and it is excellent, the person who preserved it is to be double commended. Anyone care to shout out any other books/stories that have the same theme? I love living on your own/roughing it porn.

I stayed up until 2:30am reading this. Although it is not fiction, it satisfies the same urge to read things like Jules Verne's Mysterious Island, Robinson Crusoe, etc. Bonus - real photographs. Well told and fascinating. I want to know more.

This was very very good. I'm still thinking about 8 hours after I read it. Thank god I got the link before MeFi went down.

Is there some ingrained urge in humans to get away from everyone?
