The Spot

The Spot is back. The mid-nineties experiment in creating an online soap returns, telling the story of some new housemates via webdiaries, photographs and videos. You can see the original site via The Wayback Machine. I'm suddenly overtaken by a nostalgic glow.

VH-1 "I Love the 90's" is going to consist of nothing but screen shots of failed dot-coms.

I preferred The Squat. It's still around.

They say that when people start feeling nostalgic for the time when you came of age, that's the first sign that you're old, old, old.

(Actually, I have to confess, the first sign for me is when the centerfold women in Playboy started having birthdates that came after I graduated high school.)

I just meant that I don't like how confusing and vapid the pop culture has become since, and that I'm sick of all the low-riding jeans the girls wear nowadays, and that nobody really plays their own instruments anymore.
How does that make me old?

How does that make me old?

Um... How does it not? My grandfather says the same thing.

Maybe you lived in a different 90's than I did, but back then pop culture was just as vapid, nobody played their own instruments, and the fashion trends were just as stupid. Thats what makes them fashion trends.

For every American Idol, there's a Star Search. For every Cribs, there's a Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. For every 'NSYNC, there's a New Kids on The Block. For every low-rider jeans, there's wearing your clothes backwards. Remember Kris-Kross? Good times, good times.

Heh, now I sound old...

Say what you will about pop culture, but do not discourage the low-riding jeans, sir.

I too am nostalgic for The Spot, even though I really never looked at it. It's the first thing I remember about the Internet that made me say, "This is really pointless and stupid." (And not good pointless and stupid, either, like the meepzorp blort.)

Before Firefox crashed (first time ever) I was 5 paragraphs into a post on my nostalgia for Word.com, the "old" Word.com as designed by Yoshi Sodeaka. Suffice to say that I built my major in college around hypertext and the academic discursive bric-a-brac like semiotics and intertextuality in part because I was inspired by Word.com, and felt like my heart was broken when Yoshi Sodeoka gave up. I felt, and still feel, like the Web's spirit died then.

Yes, I'm nostalgic for the halcyon days of Suck and Spot and Stim and Spiv (wow, do I feel old-school) when the Web was full of artistic and linguistic promise. I know it's silly, but it seemed like we were on the other side of an artistic revolution, a literary revolution. Am I the only one?
