On the command line. Start -> Run -> cmd on Windows (I think). On OSX and Linux just open up a shell.

I get the error "stream not seekable".

I got the same warning, the file works fine in the end, it just means that if you were viewing it, and not ripping it, that you wouldn't be able to seek (fast fwd/reverse) in the file. It took about 5 minutes or so to rip on my 1.5Mb DSL.

Any recommendations on a tracker to torrent it? I'd use SuprNova but I figure it's blocked most places. I'd put it up on my webserver, but you'd all crush it... :)

Weird pre 9-11 money supply anomaly :

There's an odd "9-11" anomaly obvious in the figures from that graph - a 75 billion plus M1 bulge in the 3-month period just prior to Sept. 11. It's very unusual in context - the month-to-month M1 fluctuations during the four years prior to September 11, 2001 were only very occasionally more than 10 billion - around 15 billion twice (I counted) and maybe 13 billion once. And the average fluctuation is probably only 3-5 billion. But in June-July 2001, M1 goes up about 12 billion, and then again by the same amount in July-August. Then, in August to September, BAM! - a 52 billion increase (off the scale).

Then, in the September to October 2001 period, M1 declines by 37.5 billion.

Odd.

When Bush-Bashers Collide. Moore's Film at Odds with Clarke Remarks
While promoting the documentary, Moore has not been shy in linking Bush's alleged "relationship" with the bin Laden family to the flight that took the bin Ladens and other Saudis from the U.S. following Sept. 11, 2001.

"So here is Bush trying to deal with everything on Sept. 11, 12 13th, you know. You remember, everybody remembers the total state of chaos and people, just everyone, all of us, discombobulated by the whole thing, and he had the time to be thinking -- what can I do to help the bin Ladens right now," Moore told Pacifica radio last October.

"And all of these elaborate plans were made, because [the Saudis] were spread out throughout the country, to be able to pick them up, get them to Boston and then get them to Paris," Moore said.

"While we are being told that the hunt is on for Osama bin Laden, what is really going on is when you got 24 bin Ladens here, (a disputed number) you know, none of them are asked for any kind of help. None of them are interrogated, and they are given the royal red carpet treatment in the days after September 11th. My question is why? What is really going on here?" Moore asked.

But [Richard] Clarke recently admitted that he alone approved the exit of the bin Laden kin -- damaging the key premise of Moore's film.

The decision to approve the flights, Clarke admitted last week, had been his own. The request "didn't get any higher than me," he told The Hill .

"On 9-11, 9-12 and 9-13, many things didn't get any higher than me. I decided it in consultation with the FBI," Clarke said of the plane flight carrying bin Laden's relatives.

"I take responsibility for it. I don't think it was a mistake, and I'd do it again," he added. The Saudis and bin Laden's relatives were flown from the U.S. out of fear for their safety following the terror attacks.

Orange Goblin, first, I'm not a Moorehead. I just saw Roger and Me this weekend and I didn't care for the way he tried to blame a failing community on one man who only had a small role in its demise, but he pretty reputably defended everything that he presented in Columbine as factual. The fact that he had a corps of fact checkers and lawyers comb every bit of that movie multiple times is admirable. Making 9/11 he knew he would be visciously attacked by the right, and I'm sure he has taken great pains to be factual. Using facts to manipulate your audience is not the same as making facts up.

In the past few years, Moore's become a bit more shrill, but I think his movies, while sometimes victims of bad editing for the sake of getting his point across, stand on their own.

Bowling for Columnbine, to me, was about America's fascination with violence especially in contrast to Canada. Sure guns were a big part of it, but I didn't see the film as anti-gun. But in the end, I think the movie didn't win many converts and turned most of the public away from his message.

When I first heard of this 9/11 movie, I thought he went off the deepend (the inflammatory title, etc). But watching this clip, it looks like many folks will see something new in it. I think Saudi Arabia is a bipartisan issue -- everyone seems to find the Saudi gov't dubious. My hope is that Moore isn't so over the top on this movie so that everyone finds something to like or points to be made in it, but I think the title alone will drive folks away.

Ray Bradbury: "Michael Moore is an asshole"
Michael Moore stole the title to his fictuous documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" from author Ray Bradbury (picture), who in 1953 wrote his dystopic scifi classic "Fahrenheit 451." So what does Ray Bradbury, now 84 years old, think about Moore using his book title for his Bush-bashing movie project?

The answer is, as journalists in the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter found out when they called the author, that he is mighty pissed off. Here's my translation of the juicier bits of the interview.

"Michael Moore is a screwed asshole, that is what I think about that case. He stole my title and changed the numbers without ever asking me for permission.

Have you spoken to him?

- He is a horrible human being. Horrible human!

. . .

The conversation touched politics when Bradbury mentioned that Moore had ruined general Wesley Clark's chances to become the democrat's presidential candidate. Like several American commentators Bradbury means that Moore's support to Clark was a kiss of death when Clark did not distance himself from Moore's claim that Bush deserted from his military service.

- He slandered the president to general Clark, and Clark allowed him to do it. Clark should have said: "Don't say that. It is not true." That day Clark lost his chance to become president.

I understand. And you supported general Clark?

- No. I support honesty.

So O'Reilly "stole" from Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Franken "stole" 'Fair and Balanced' from Fox? Not this nonsense again. Bradbury disappoints, particularly considering the primary premise of Fahrenheit 451 itself.

Huh? This movie is really Moore's first cinematic foray into presidential politics: his previous movies have focused more on cultural and corporate-responsibility issues. And I'm sure he'd find plenty to criticize even on the presidential level regardless of who's in office: he was pretty outspoken in his criticism of Clinton's trade policies and uses of military force, as I remember. Hell, he supported Nader over Gore in the 2000 election.

I should add that, in fact, I generally respect Bradbury's work much more than Moore's. But it's true, you can't copywright a title (although conventional wisdom in Hollywood is that Lucas has laid down so many legal obstacles for anyone who might want to call something "Star Wars" that he has effectively copywrighted it anyway). And if Bradbury objected, was Moore going to change the title just to make him happy? A new screen version of Bradbury's book is in production, and Moore's film could only help its publicity. Leave it alone, Ray.
posted by bingo at 10:05 AM on June 3, 2004

Not only that, Zetetics, but Bradbury has used Dickens as a fictional character. Same with Emilie Dickinson and Edgar Alan Poe. I'm assuming that the rationale is that they're dead.

Did the World Trade Center towers undergo a deliberate “power-down” on the weekend prior to the 9-11 terrorist attacks?

"Forbes did stress, though, that there was power to the WTC’s lower floors, and that there were plenty of engineers going in-and-out of the WTC who had free access throughout the building due to its security system being knocked out. In an e-mail to journalist John Kaminski.....Forbes wrote: “Without power there were no security cameras, no security locks on doors, and many, many ‘engineers’ coming in and out of the tower.”...Forbes didn’t think much of these occurrences at the time"

Kinda reminds me of that statement, immediately after the WTC collapse, by one of the US' foremost demo experts - that the Towers were clearly demo-ed.

Man, he sure backpedalled fast on that call.

oh, I almost forgot -- since we're discussing controversial documentaries...

...veteran filmmaker George Butler removed the lid from a pristine orange box and treated a visitor to a rare preview of his latest project.

"This is John Kerry with John Lennon at a peace rally in Bryant Park," he said, gesturing toward a glossy 1971 photograph of Mr. Kerry, then a budding anti-war leader, looking smooth-skinned and pensive next to a bespectacled Lennon. There were other pictures, too, from another age, another era: Mr. Kerry leading a troupe of Vietnam veterans to Congress in 1971; Mr. Kerry, hands stuffed in his pockets, after he lost a bid for Congress in 1970; Mr. Kerry with his first wife, Julia Thorne, at their wedding.

"You know, these photos show a side of John Kerry that no one else can show," the 60-year-old Mr. Butler said, referring to these and some 6,000 other pictures he has taken of the candidate since 1969. He chuckled lightly: "If the Republicans knew where they were, they would probably steal them."

And not entirely without reason.

Mr. Butler’s photographs are the building blocks of a controversial 90-minute documentary he is directing about the life and times of Candidate Kerry. Based loosely on Douglas Brinkley’s biography, Tour of Duty, the film chronicles Mr. Kerry’s heroics in Vietnam and his subsequent turn as the earnest, fatigues-wearing leader of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. To help pull the project together for a September release, Mr. Butler—who made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star with his 1977 documentary Pumping Iron—has amassed $1.3 million and a crew of Academy Award–winning editors and big-name producers like Kill Bill’s Lawrence Bender. When the film hits theaters shortly after the Republican National Convention, it could become one of Mr. Kerry’s most potent campaign tools, burnishing his image as a seasoned leader while molding his identity as a loyal family man Americans can trust.

One thing I've noticed is the lack of protest music over this war.

Billy Bragg wrote Price of Oil (mp3) but, as much as I adore Bragg, it is a pretty mediocre song. There was also that Beastie Boys one, but that was pretty piss poor, if you remember. I've downloaded a few more obscure contemporary protest songs, but I just can't get into them. Something about hearing "George Bush" and "Saddam" in a song is just cheesy as hell. Give me the timeless classics any day.

What mainstream artists are writing anything about Iraq?

What "mainstream" artists are writing anything about anything, really?

Seriously, though (and to segue back into on-topic discussion) here's hoping that the upcoming release of this film is a sign that politics is becoming more mainstream to some extent.

As for Moore's film, I am not a huge fan of Moore, but after seeing the trailer I am looking forward to seeing the film. Nevertheless, though, I feel like he dropped the ball in the first 30 seconds or so -- he has so much excellent, juicy ammunition (as the past couple years and latter parts of the trailer show) but my fear is that he'll detract from the real issues with too much focus on,"OMG! Osama Bin Conspiracy" stuff.

And screw Ray Bradbury. As juiceCake pointed out, what a stupid and ironic sentiment.
