Meet the Weblog. Time Magazine describes the trendy fascination with online digests.

They do sound interesting, but having said that they're probably just a flash in the pan. I can't see anyone bothering with them in the long run. Does anyone here know anything about them? Or perhaps someone here has even tried there hand at 'blogging'? An excellent link plexi, you have dug up something which I think is both novel and which none of us would otherwise have stumbled across.

"Blogging"? What a ridiculous name -- who would buy something called a "blog"? That alone is enough to smother it in its cradle.

It does raise an interesting point though: what is Matt wearing when he brings down Washington politicians in his spare time?

Aw, crap! You mean there's another new intarweb layout to figure out?

I was just starting to get the hang of running WildCat! Mustang under
DOS 6.22, and now I gotta figure out some entirely new stuff altogether!

I hear "blog" is short for "blithering frog."

Say what you want about this UUCP-based e-mail, but I'll stick with receiving my Fidonet mail in BlueWave QWK packets at 1:3603/998.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a .plan to update.

Geez, I tried finding out more about this "blog" business but I just couldn't get the mainframe time.

Apparently, TIME was a physical paper magazine which, at some point in history, citizens used to keep them informed of news and current events.

I just wanted to point out that I really enjoyed that.

The next issue of Time, I hear, is on something their sources are calling "indoor plumbing."

Naw, next week it's the Wheel.

After that they're doing a big piece on the invention of fire, and then something on the decline in leeching as an effective medical tool, and after that, something about "Galileo: Renaissance Crackpot, Or Merely Ahead Of His Time?"

Jesus, didn't anyone even read to the 2nd paragraph?

Over the past five years, blogs have gone from an obscure and, frankly, somewhat nerdy fad to a genuine alternative to mainstream news outlets, a shadow media empire that is rivaling networks and newspapers in power and influence.

All of you falling all over yourself to pretend that Time just now noticed there are blogs, when right there in plain English they state they are not a new phenomenon, is just absurd.

Bloggers are a funny lot. They spend countless man-hours trying to prove if a girl is really a girl or not, and then can't even be bothered to read mainstream coverage of their favorite pastime.

I must say, I rather enjoyed the phrase "wag the blog" from the article. Probably not the first use of it, but a first for me.

It's a little known fact that Time keeps the stuffed corpse of John Shaw Billings in the corporate offices.

Well, that's that then.

So what are we gonna do next, now that TEH BLOGG is dead?

I suggest beer and bodysurfing.

And what exactly are they doing to the established pantheon of American media?

Reproducing it daily on MetaFilter's front page?

I suggest beer and bodysurfing.

Or bodies and beer surfing.

I dunno, rather than gloat about how out of touch the old folks at time are, maybe we she should take this instructively: no matter how much we think of ourselves and what a big deal all the tempest in a teapots we create are, the great mass of the world dosen't know we fucking exist.

iirc, it was the princeton review, really, that first coined the term blog :D

also, fwiw, an interesting 'paper' on what the internet is doing to change the way we think and operate in society that in turn shapes human culture! (via bOINGbOING)
