Many of Gotham's underground secrets are "discovered" again and again by each generation. However, I rarely read about the never-used subway tunnel that runs beneath Central Park, south of 72nd Street and North of 59th. This is a fully completed subway line, with track, lights, paint and all amenities. I went in through a construction entrance in the early 1970s and walked the tracks for a good distance. At some point in that decade, the entrance was sealed, and the line never used. I imagine it was associated with the long-promised Second Avenue Line. It's right there in the shadow of the Plaza, but seems to have been lost to the city's collective memory.

The worlds fair site is indeed fascinating. "Access was provided by high-speed elevators, one of which has been stuck two-thirds of the way up for many years now." ...wonder if there's anyone in it.

If you have some time to kill, stop by a bookstore and thumb through "Invisible New York" by Stanley Greenberg. He's taken an amazing set of photos of just this kind of stuff.
