newsfilter! metafilter! newsfilter! metafilter!
waxy.org has published a list of the top 50 sites we've linked to since 1999, and it looks like those who cry newsfilter may have a point.
or is this simply another example of "lies, damn lies", and is the content that is linked to more interesting than the mainstream source would seem to indicate?
this is so recursive it makes my head hurt

Even more recursive than you are acknowledging...

People post a neverending stream of links-we've-all-seen-before from NYT, BBC & CNN? Say it ain't so! Will this deter people from making these predictable posts in the future? The Magic 8-Ball says......No :(

You mean people regularly copy-paste huge chunks of text from obscure sources like the Washington Post and Salon.com to have their ego stroked grind an axe get attention circle jerk make their point on the front page of MeFi? I refuse to believe it!

No worries dolface - there's no shame in doubleposting something with a 1-hour margin across Meta/Mefi. The search engine sure as hell ain't gonna help you there.

I'll repeat myself from the MetaTalk thread...
Okay, a total of 27,173 domains linked in 34,829 posts (including deletions).

18,841 of them appear only once; 3806 twice, 1621 three times, 785 four times and 511 five times, for a grand total of 37,011 links from 25,564 domains.

Compare that to 7,282 links to the Top Ten sites (NOT including MetaFilter.com itself, MetaMeta Linking is a whole 'nother issue), 9,863 to all the Top 20, 11,339 to all the Top 30, 12,344 to all the Top 40, 13,261 for all the Top 50.

Sounds like a pretty wide distribution to me.

yeah, more appropriate for metatalk, but i wouldn't have seen it otherwise. that said, eh. mathowie and amberglow already made my potential comment in the other thread.

on preview: 37,011 links from 25,564 domains is excellent. bravo!

What everybody else said: small sites will get linked how many times, once? twice? The NYT will get linked a lot more often, and of course its frequency will be right up there. I run a meta-NewsFilter and the frequency of MeFi back-links is roughly ~5/day which does not account for NewsFilter posts with multiple sources. Say 4 FPPs on average to big news sites per day, that is not NewsFilterish...

When something big comes up (like the death of Rick James), there is a reflexive posting. That is why there are so many nwsfltr-type postings here.

But my subjective view of metafilter is that most of the sites referenced are interesting in their design, their intent, their content...etc.

Metafilter and Arts and Letters Daily (and Salon) are my three morning coffee sites.

News I can get on CNN or Agonist or Atrios or my local paper. But a news post on Metafilter: fine: I can read it...or not.

Just take the top ten or so off that list and make them verboten to link from.

Is there a reasonable way to look at this data in more detail? (without beating metafilter with a spider)

I'm wondering if the distribution has changed over time, or if it's always been like this, and it's just more obvious because of the volatile nature of many recent posts.

For self appointed hall monitor dhoyt, cheap shots taken at other members count for about 75% of his contributions to the site. Petty "R" him, 24/7.
