If anyone wants more hurricane coverage, here's my Isabel blog from last year. For ease of use, here are the picture posts, which are the only thing worth viewing, imho. Warning: self-link (obviously), and retarded bitterness about having no power for 2 days or so.

i'm very anxious about this stupid hurricane. i have a very good friend in miami whom i haven't been able to contact and i'm worried about her and her cats and dog. when you have to evacuate like that what happens to pets, do hotels and shelters let you bring them...? orlando looks like it's going to get the shit kicked out of it too, even tho' that's where everyone was supposed to be safe.
plus, i sure hope dong resin doesn't get, uhm, blown out to sea.
what with the regularly damaging weather, death by skin cancer, and the fixed elections, i don't understand why anyone would want to live in fla.

We've had rain and strong winds almost all day here in Fort Lauderdale, but thankfully we didn't get the worst of it. I didn't lose power, although the homes on the other side of my street are without power. We'll probably have some pretty bad flooding.

My dad, in Key West, says this is the first time in his memory (25 years there) that the residents of the upper Keys have been ordered to evacuate down to the lower Keys rather than to the mainland. Gives you an idea of how big and unpredictable Frances is. At least this time the lower Keys are not gonna see a lot of ancillary damage....

take care Florida people--they just said on CNN that it's moving incredibly slowly, and won't even be out of Florida til Tues, but will slowly weaken.

A net.friend of mine is also blogging his hurricane experiences at his site. He's doing some cool multimedia - video and time-lapse.
I'm in FL myself, though I'm pretty far west. We've had a couple of squalls from feeder bands, but nothing of serious note. Around four or five this morning is when we're supposed to get the actual front.

I've lived in almost all the hurricane states, including Florida, so I know what this is like. Those huge, slow ones that want to just sit on top and pummel you for a day or two are way scary.
t r a c y , I'm not sure about the pets thing, because we always managed to have somewhere (friend or relative) to go, when we evacuated (with our cat), but I imagine everybody tries to be as accommodating as possible.

Occasional squalls, winds gusting to maybe 50-60 mph max, only 2-3 inches of rain so far. I just stepped outside to look around, lost a few small branches, lots of leaves down. No loss or fluctuation in power, praise FPL.
We were in this house for Andrew, took a direct hit with no structural damage. That was a war, this was like a game of touch football. With several overtimes.
Our dog sleeps on the patio. It's protected from rain and from the northerly wind we've been getting. She freaks out with thunder and lightning so we usually bring her in, but apparently she doesn't mind the wind.
Yes, I checked, she's still here.

FYI, 400 lb. gorillas aside, you can't bring a pet to a hurricane shelter.

Pets in shelters - sometimes one or two shelters are designated as "pet friendly". You have to crate your pet, have food and water for it, and also all immunizations up to date. Service animals, of course, are welcome in regular shelters.
I'm just amazed at how incredibly slow-moving this storm is. I wonder if Frances has made any records with regards to its reluctance to cross the state.

from watching the news it seems like the hotels are more pet friendly than the hurricane shelters are.
yah, it's really amazing how slowly it's moving. i can hardly wait 'til it's all over and i hear from my friend.

Could be, considering it's forecast to take a brief foray across the Gulf before hitting the panhandle. My parents and sister are near Panama City, so this storm is getting a bit personal - and not just because my mom's name if Frances.

Its really hitting here in Jacksonville now...serious wind gusts and downed trees. Nice to be forced to stay inside and read for once...not stressing about working in the yard.

I just moved here to Melbourne FL 3 weeks ago. From Richmond, VA. Frances was a lot like Isabel was, except it was WAYYYY longer, and this state is much better prepared for this sort of thing. In Richmond I was trying to drive home from work after the first feeder bands hit, here I was given 2 days off from work so I could leave! Hope the rest of the Floridians fared ok, and are ready for Ivan!
