The piatarbajo, the chromelodeon, the trimba, cloud chamber bowls, the simeon, the pyrophone, the virtual rhythmicon, cigar box guitars, the skatar, and all the other assorted instruments by musical visionaries who find guitar, bass, drums, and the symphony orchestra too confining.

awesome post. slightly less mindblowing than the chromelodeon (43-tone-to-the-octave scale?!), but still pretty cool, is the optigan.

Cool! something I came across recently: "Gametone" homemade instruments, "loosely patterned after Indonesian Gamelan and other world instruments". (And you can play some of them online.)

Listen to the Ditumba drum at the beginning of this Afropop stream. The drum has the dried egg sac of a spider attached which is what makes the odd buzzing sound.

p.s. the rest of the stream is fantastic.

p.p.s. Real audio
