My City is Almost Gone

While reading up on the Detroit City Council's latest brainstorm, African Town, I stumbled upon this blog that highlights many of the once great, now decaying buildings of my former hometown. If you've ever wondered what was inside some of those ancient, boarded up buildings, there are some great photos here.

Reminds me of the Urban Exploration people - good find, I love this sort of stuff.

See also Forgotten Detroit and The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit (with the hilariously ironic URL...).

Great post, Oriole. Reminds me of the days when I used to work in Harmonie Park and we'd walk to Greektown for lunch, past all of the ruined, closed-down, burned-out husks of buildings still standing there....

...Of course, these days depending on who you talk to Detroit is really on the verge of a new rebirth.

Really.

Seriously, we're not joking, any day now.

African Town. Brilliant, that.
*weeps at blistering stupidity of Detroit politicos*

Hey, has there ever been a Motown Mefi Meetup?

At any given moment, the most vacant, decaying building in Detroit is the one that houses the City Council.

(leotrotsky, there was a meetup in Ann Arbor once that was attended, I believe, by tj and insomnyuk)

One of my friends used to do this in Detroit. That is, go into old abandoned buildings and take pictures... Forget where his site is though.

Yep, this is the dumbest thing the Detroit City Council has done in a long time. And that's saying something.

Later installments can be found here and here.

Lemme know if the meetup thing coalesces.
