I'm a new yorker, but the yankee world series thing is a bore (and anyway I was always a mets fan). This series was awesome, though. Coming back after being three games down, and in such dramatic fashion... losing 18-7, then being tied into extra innings twice in a row, then coming back strong for the last two adrenaline filled games... good stuff, and I'm a very half-assed sports fan.

You’ve got a formidable but basically evil incumbent machine, that clearly represents big money interests and has zillions of dollars to try to buy victory, which it has been quite successful at doing ever since the mid-90s. You’ve got a challenger from Massachusetts, who fell behind early and has made a variety of missteps that hurt its/his chances. Now, in a series of highly-watched contests on national television, the challenger has managed to climb back into it,though still trailing narrowly. [and win!]

I've always found it strange that the MeFi gestalt so seems to disdain sports, while it drools over film and TV. Show me a movie more unpredictable and uplifting than these last four days of baseball.
Boston: As a Cubs fan, I promise you the last little piece of my heart if you can demolish whichever of our NL central rivals you face, and help put an end to the curse bullshit that dogs us both.
Does anybody know if the crew of Fever Pitch are still filming real games for the movie? They may have changed the sport and location, but Nick Hornby should be honored by the fidelty this Red Sox team is showing his story.

As someone who grew up a Yankees fan, I've got to say: Congrats! It was a fantastic series and the AL should always go through NY and Boston. But I'm going to pull for Houston and Clemens tomorrow -- because that storyline would make for a great World Series.

Or maybe it's just personal - the first baseball game I ever saw, when I was a little kid and I loved the Blue Jays, at the Exhibition stadium - I was so excited! .....and they were beated by the Yankees.

not only did they beat the yankees
they beat an amazing yankee team so deep it didnt look like they missed giambi at all.

As a Yankees fan, I had a rather standard amount of enthusiasm through the Brewers series, and was excited somewhat by the initial start of the ALCS Series, as well dismayed by watching Dennis Leary, sporting his cynical B, saying the Sox would find a way to lose. I knew, that if this Sox team could come back, we Yanks had no chance. The pitching simply was not there this year. Come on, curse nonsense or not, 1918 is a LONG LONG time. WW1 was going on the last time the Sox won it all. I will probably check in on the Series, but am not so so sad that the Yankees are not in it. To next season.... That 96 parade will still live on in my head -- when I was TRULY upset that Mattingly was not there to get the ring -- but ecstatic to stand there snapping photos with that cheap cam in the old canyon.

I was rooting for the Yankees, but I'm very impressed with the Red Sox, who certainly earned their historic victory. Maybe this is their year after all! Houston or St. Louis, it's going to be a great matchup.
On Preview: If the World Series is still going on at election time I do hope they'll be able to use it to encourage people to vote. I'm afraid some people will use it as an excuse not to.

Considering that my co-workers will likely make me wear a Red Sox shirt for the next week, I send mighty congrats to all BoSox fans. They earned it, they deserve it, and I have never seen anything like it. While I wanted nothing more than to have Roger get his ass handed to him, the prospect of seeing him play again in Fenway is quite exciting.
This was a grueling series - the most telling stat (to me) was how strong the Yankees first 4 were for the first three games and how they fell apart for the next four games.
Can someone please wake Ted Williams?

As a Yankees fan - congrats and enjoy the ride - we knew the '04 Sox were a hell of team, even up 3-0.

Heh, my university student newspaper publishes on Thursdays and it came out today with a full page "World Series Predictor" article that has the Yankees beating the Cardinals. I don't know if I should run down to their office and shake it in their face or just let the facts speak for themselves. (I realize it likely goes to print waaay in advance, but the timing just cracked me up, especially since the author is a blatant Yanks fan)

I woke up dancing. That was the World Series. And the BoSox won. It wasn't just a beautiful dream.

I have to admit that I sat down on the couch and wept last night when the game was over. I wish my Grandfather was still alive to see this. I never thought, after '86, that I'd hope like this for the Sox again.

I know I'm violating my Metafilter Sabbatical, but this is an extraordinary circumstance. It will be truly enjoyable to watch and listen to (on WFAN) Yankee fans react to this. The Yankees losing, imho is more important than the Red Sox winning in this situation. But I do hope they win the world series--it may buy at least a year of MU HA HA HA for this Mets fan.

And then you see something like this and try to remember that its just a game. There's no reason to beat someone because the team he roots for beat your team.
Same thing for the riots and violence in both New York and Boston, one celebrating, the other venting.

News just in that a 21-year old college student has died from injuries sustained during last night's Fenway-area celebrations/riots.
Sixteen people were reported injured as Boston police had to use what they describe as "less-than-lethal force'' to control rowdy fans.

It gets him votes with the Brahmins who think, "At least that member of the unwashed masses doesn't drink." One imagines the night after making these grand claims Menino gets a call reminding him his police force is still heavily Irish and would rise up en masse were they pushed to enforce such a "law." Assuming he could force a bill through the State House inside 48 hours.

A few thoughts:
Johnny Damon embodies the true baseball kid genius and poet. What class.
Ortiz is shaped like Babe Ruth and hits like him. I like his pimp-daddy fur coat.
Shilling was brillant. And a poet with a bum ankle. But that whole thing about being born again for 7 years after the game had me rethinking that whole Dominionism thread. Also Lowe, Embry, Arroyo (cept for the horrible game on Sat.) Leskajanic were solid too.
Arod embodies the arrogance of a smug overpaid technician with no soul. Plus he choked last night, plus he's a dirty cheater. What a scumbag. This is the legacy of true poet geniuses as Lou Gerhig, Dimaggio, Yogi or Thurman Munson or Greg Nettles or Bucky Dent ?? (I know I'm missing a bunch here...). I think not. The Yankees need to do some soul searching. Plus they're ruining baseball with these insane payrolls. You cannot buy the pennant!! Or the World Series.
Jeter used to have something of the true baseball kid genius, but has gone to the dark side and is smug and spoiled. He just comes across as the lesser Arod type technician with no soul.
Hideki is a genius. He might even be a poet. Although something tells me he's too measured and controlled for that.

I agree with you-- I exploded when I saw him on the mound. But did you notice that by the end of the inning, he had turned into 1999 Pedro? 97 mph fastball and breaking balls that were practically circling the plate!
It doesn't seem smart to me, but it sure made me nostalgic.

My baseball loyalties are with the Anaheim Angels (I grew up hero-worshipping Nolan Ryan), and I, in true contrarian fashion, usually transfer my allegience to the team that beat my team (on the highly doubtful basis that if the Red Sox beat the Yankees/Cards/Astros as badly as they did the Angels, then the Angels must be as good as those other teams... and, of course, the reason the Sox struggled so badly at first against the Yanks was that pummelling the Halos wore them out so badly...)

Pedro was hitting 97 because he was in for one inning and didn't need to conserve anything. Here's to poet genuises; I think that old St. Louis Browns fan Tom Elliot was joking when he suggested "April is the cruelest month." April may be windy, mean and raw, but it is rebirth. As far as I know, they are not. They just filmed that one scene at Fenway a few weeks ago, which is the climax of the movie. It features Drew Barrymore running across the infield and being chased by Johnny Damon, which turned out to be pretty fitting given his performance in the series.
They have already had to do minor re-writes to the movie, since they're still filming in Toronto right now, in tandem with the actual events taking place. And if the Sox do win, there are more minor script changes set to go.
