Kerry Won... Greg Palast presents information on how votes were "spoiled," and thus never counted, in states like Ohio and New Mexico, resulting in Bush's re-election. Unfortunately, he concludes by saying that there will probably be nothing done about it.

American votes are that picky? Dear god.

In the UK our ballot slips are all printed and we simply put a big pencil cross in the box we want.

It goes off and gets counted - and ALL the votes are counted by about 3am - five hours after the polls close. Now, I know you have a larger country, but how does it take you so long to count up slips of paper?

there is no justification for spoiled papers other than those deliberately spoiled by the voter.

This shouldn't be deleted. The votes still haven't been counted.

It's important.

His assumption that only Democrats mess up votes seems a bit suspect no?

Bummer, its an article that should be discussed.

If not all the votes are counted that should be counted then that is electoral fraud and another election's been stolen.

How in the holy hell is this not news?

amberglow, you are just becoming increasingly pathetic. Get over it.

Americans: your voting system sucks donkey cock. You all know this. Posting to Metafilter ain't gonna help. GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND DO SOMETHING.

Seth, every vote should be counted otherwise the election is a fraud, again. Why do you hate the Democratic process so much?

All votes should, indeed, be counted--that respect is due to each individual voter. But Kerry didn't win in the preliminary results, and he's not going to win in the final results.

Greg Palast isn't helping, frankly. Instead of agitating about what has already happened, he should be thinking about the future. In my opinion.

Palast was onto something in Florida in 2000. Here, not so much. And I'm cynical enough to think he probably knows that.

God. The guy I voted for got beat. Now I have two options:
(1) whine about it and try to make excuses; or
(2) accept the fact that I got beat, and work for a better guy next time (hopefully a DLC type or a Scoop Jackson type, as if we didn't need that point made yet again).

Some people can't accept that they lost. I guess they feel that it is a personal rejection. That is sad. But denying the reality of the situation won't get anywhere. Kerry lost. All the bitching in the world won't change that. It just lowers one's credibility.
