Tom Claytor is a bush pilot who set out solo in 1990 to fly around the world. He keeps a website showcasing his pictures and detailing some of his incredible experiences. He is still abroad and recently did aerials for the upcoming Thai film, First Flight.

Assorted highlights:

* Algerian officials who, upon seeing his bush pilot card, become suspicious that he is George Bush's pilot

* Comoros (I prefer "Islands of the Moon"), home of the coelacanth and the Ylang Ylang

* His friend Hugh in Kenya, who explains fossilized turds, the best way to shoot a giraffe, zebra hot dogs, and the merits of Fahrenheit

While I find the type of people who generally attempt these types of record breaking feats to be incurable ego-masterbuaters, I do find myself constantly jealous that I'm not rich enough, brave enough, talented enough or foolhardy enough to do stuff like this. It just seems so freaking cool.

My favorite was on a recent Discovery Channel special. Its the story of Ron Bower and his trip around the world in a helicopter.

God, I'd love to just go around my house in a helicopter.

Damn, and when he finally comes home, he gets to live in a treehouse? Lucky bastard.

Richard Branson might be a huge wanker, but it looks like this guy is just in it for the experience. I'd do it if I had the means.

That Gilgil, Kenya entry is incredible for all the neat people he introduces you to.
