GIVE ME A WEAPON OF MASS AFFECTION a boy band (called Boy O Boy) that sings a song like you've never heard/seen before (quicktime video, in a popup, but oh so worth it)

This is the worst thing in the entire world I have ever seen in musical form. It just keeps getting worse, too. I will never get these minutes back. I need to quit clicking on links.

blacklite - you know it was a joke, right, intentionally bad? I thought it was kinda clever. Ignited Minds is an ad agency, about a block from where I work in L.A., this was perhaps their corporate holiday card?

Whatever happened to boy bands? We haven't seen any new ones since NSync broke up. Have they been replaced on the teen musical palate by whiny nasal pop punk?

OK, I haven't been keeping up with boy bands lately or anything, but is there anything different about this from what's hitting the charts lately? Seems like something that big group "Three Times One Minus One" would do.

I was thinking it was a parody... a put-on, until I went to the website of the ad agency that created it, and was assaulted by a Flash-driven assortment of advertising cliches, stating the obvious and unsubstantiated claims of 'edginess'...
Our print portfolio isn't so much an exhibition of the best work we've done, but a tribute to the clients who had the courage to let us do it...
It's not interactive advertising until somebody decides to click on it...
Suppositories. Proof that good things and small packages don't always go together...

...while namedropping a client list dominated by video games (including games based on movies and the propaganda game "America's Army"), Sony and... what's this? Loyola Marymount University? (or as they redundantly call it, LMU University) No-o-o-o! Not my alma mater! I'm going to have to give my degree back!!!
Anyway, after looking at the mindset of so-called-IgnitedMinds, it's clear to me hat the 'boy o boy' video represents a dead serious effort on their part, and pretty much the best they can do!

The video also has decent AfterEffects, which is trendy and MTV-esque. The video also has a Card Dance/Shatter explosion effect which is possibly the biggest, most awful design faux pas in motion graphics...actually, it's a travesty, the biggest, most awful travesty in motion graphics.

Hmm. After wendell's comment, I also looked around the Ignited Minds site for a few minutes, and conclude the sincerity behind their video effort is genuine, but the thrust of their whole approach/persona/etc is perfect pop irony in a shiny, vapid shell. They mean it, of course. They "really, really mean it," I mean. Or I'm just being mean, really. In any case, their ironic stance intends to deflect any criticism with its buoyant freshness, like some kind of fabric softener or douche. Too bad they fail. That kind of thing is entertaining when it works.

You've got to be shitting me. Way to hate on something halfway decent. You don't like it, that's fine. But it's well done for something made for laughs. Putting it down in a post-post-ironic way is worth 0 cool points, so everyone save their "Look at my reaction" reactions for the next meme thread.

posted by JanetLand at 4:54 AM on December 15, 2004

yerfatma, I ain't hatin', I'm laughin', but the slippery part at issue -- if there's an issue here: real question -- is how serious this effort is and what effects it's after, unless I'm misreading wendell. There's nothing wrong with fooling around or playing seriously; I don't think that's wendell's point or mine. What bugs with Boy O Boy isn't "Weapons of Mass Affection" so much as Ignited Minds. Look at the site. Some of that shit would pass in MetaFilter some days in some threads with some people, but most of it would be slapped down hard in short order, because it's so chirpy and ironic you want to hit 'em in their . . . ahem.

It's not easy to produce such a piece that provides the perfect balance between laughing and groaning. Quite well done.

I do live in fear though when the next highly manicured boy band is going to be announced. I am hoping that period of music history is behind us. I wait....

I don't really have a problem with their site. They're an ad agency. I don't trust an ad agency and I don't want to hire one, but some people are looking for one and that's the kind of thing that sells as bleeding edge right now. Nothing ever changes: what's bleeding edge in marketing is what was cool in the recent past. The only difference is the cycles have gotten shorter. Look at Nike's new Lebron campaign and it's anime stylings.

from 10 things about people who play
4) They are acutely aware of what's new and cool. At least until being acutely aware of what's new and cool becomes old and uncool.
7) They create and respond to "buzz." Oddly, few of them know what an apiary is.

from Asses and Elbows (under About Us)
1) We've successfully marketed more than one billion dollars of computer and video game software. That's twice as much as agencies that have marketed a half-billion dollars of computer and video game software.
4) We believe our bottom line is your bottom line. And our bottom line is our bottom line. But our bottom line is not your bottom line. According to our CFO, this benefits you somehow.

These aren't the most juvenile or least entertaining pulls from this juvenile and dull site, but I'm not interested in transcribing too much more inane market-babble. I don't think it qualifies in any way though, as a "bleeding edge."
