Let's get Kraken!

Like most people who love mythical creatures (cryptozoology), I also collect stamps (philately). At last, someone has combined these twin fetishes in one easily displayed fashion. My favorites include the Loch Ness Monster and his ancient cousin the Kraken, especially these two which feature a guest appearance by Mickey Mouse.

Stopped collecting stamps a long time ago, but I do so love all things Kraken. Thanks jonson for this monstrous post.

CthulhuMail beats USPS every time.

Philately will get you nowhere.

jonson, do most people who love mythical creatures also collect stamps? Really? If you can back that up I'll whip it out as a non-sequitur the next time I want to derail a conversation.

Can anyone tell me how to look up the catalog number/get these stamps? I'm very confused by the Scott site it sends me to.

these are awesome.

Divine_Wino- That is almost word-for-word that same as a post I drafted, then deleted. But since you brought it up, I would really like to know if jonson can back up his assertion.

I, for one, am a fan of mythical/cryptozoological creatures, but have never had an urge towards philately. Sorry, jonson.

I was always rather partial to this Kraken.

Add me to the anecdotal evidence against the philately/cryptozoology interests link. (Ooh, postage!)

You're one of the lucky ones, jonson. Are you employed? I've been trying for years to fuse my string collection with my love for Gwyneth Paltrow. Not in any kinky way.

Sadly, doohickie, Divine_Wino & faint of butt (great user name, btw, f.o.b.), I was 100% lying for comic effect*; not only is there no known correlation between cryptozoology & philately, but neither one of them happens to be an interest of mine. Although I have been known to enjoy the occasional Kraken...

*while the joke itself may not have been funny, the fact that two (possibly three) users believed it was true certainly brightened my day. I'm almost reluctant to post this correction.

So the stamps aren't real? Now I'm more confused than ever.
posted by agregoli at 2:29 PM on December 29, 2004

fwiw, cryptozoology isn't the study of mythical animals per se, it's more about the study of creatures not yet catalogued scientifically. tracking down cryptids has actually brought rumored animals to scientific attention and subsequent classification. yes, you'll see things like loch ness and yeti bandied about, but several species per year are identified by cryptozoologists. see this.

Philately will get you nowhere.
However, combine philately with 100% lying, and you're in business.

Oh. That was supposed to be funny. I see.

I, like most numismatists, found jonson's joke extremely funny.
posted by stonerose at 7:44 PM on December 29, 2004

Do they have stamps with ligers?
posted by weston at 7:45 PM on December 29, 2004

Oh, come on, stonerose, you're not really a numismatist, are you? Can you back that assertion up?
posted by Doohickie at 9:37 PM on December 29, 2004

Ligers are pretty much my favorite animal.

You know, as I was reading this FPP, I thought to myself 'I didn't know jonson was into cryptozoology OR philately'. Phew!
