Tech Predictions 2005

Robert X. Cringely has posted his tech predictions of 2005. Among the interesting points is Microsoft failing in its entry into the anti-virus and anti-spyware businesses. Record companies continuing their decline as a result of online music stores and Affiliate sites such as this. And Sony's PS3 will be delayed giving further marketshare to Microsoft's yet-to-be-released XBOX2. Interesting to say the least.

Anyway, RXC isn't in my daily read, so this was new to me. I'm actualy excited about Microsoft entering the antivirus/antispyware biz, those things should have been integrated into windows long ago.
As far as asianmack's future, I'd guess this post will be deleted but the account will stay.

veedubya, I wanted to point out the Cringley article because I think there are some great points he brought up. As for the site, well, it's an example of a site in his #4 prediction. I didn't mean to cross any lines. If I have offended anyone, I apologize.

delmoi, I have my doubts about Microsoft entering the anti-spyware/anti-virus market.
Firstly, it looks suspiciously like they're profiting from their own repeated failures to deliver a secure OS.
Secondly, I can see how how the Microserfs' intimate knowledge of the OS could be their undoing in this area. After all, they already know the intimate details of how Windows works, so why are there still problems with it. Sometimes, it's better to have some distance, to get a better perspective on what you're trying to fix.
Well, if my prediction about asianmack is wrong, I'll be able to retire from the prediction business with a 100% failure rate.

See how he sorta kinda slipped a 2006 prediction in there as well, one that he doesn't have to include in next year's list if it's looking unlikely? Cheater.

I am having a turkey sandwhich for lunch, I brought it from home, I also brough some dried fruit that I got for Christmas, which has Sulpher Dioxide in it. The ingredients list is like: Pear (dried), Apricot (dried), Apple (dried), Sulpher Dioxide. Gross, I'ma dare myself to eat it, I think. Also does anyone think my house is going to burn down because I left the crockpot on low this morning? Can I really cook a stew for 8 hours on low and not burn down my house or also make a gross, low-end kind of stew?
Lastly, this post was written on a paper crane and set on fire and released into a little stream behind the Walmart in Newark.

My prediction for 2005 is that the whole manual comment spam as cottage industry plan is not going to work out at all, collapsing under its own weight and still these handjobs will pop up again and again over time, proving that doing something for no good reason at all is ART. And art and voluntary depilation are all the really seperate us from the animals.
's too bad cause I wanna talk about some of this Cringely stuff. Who's gonna repost?

Hi all. I stand by my post. Bob Cringley says some really interesting things about technology in 2005. Who isn't excited about the prospects of Myth TV or the headless Mac?!

What if the satisfaction isn't malicious? What if we really just don't want people to self-link in front page posts? Especially not when they are out to make money for themselves.
I never want to get into it with people over their fuckups and public pantsings on Mefi, but this one pushed me over the edge, it's purely lame and indicates a lack of respect for people who do participate properly that invalidates any kind of sympathy I'm supposed to have for this vonce who fucks with my good time. If that's schadenfreud then I'm a believer.

Um, asianmack, we don't have any issue with the Cringely part. Maybe you keep missing this: you can't link your own damn website. Websites that you make? Can't link them. Websites that you contribute to? Nope. You can self-promote inside the thread all you want, though. So the next time you get a Mefi account and want to self-promote, you can do it without losing an account! You just have to do your pimping inside the thread.

fwiw: This conversation is happening in the wrong place. And, there's something delicious about somebody backing up a point about affiliate sites by pointing to their own affiliate site. I appreciated it as the joke it probably was.
