Big Crash! An iceberg the size of Long Island is about to impact a land-bound ice mass in Anarctica. Stand back!

Corollary: What's the difference between a sound and a bay?

> A bay is a body of water that is partly enclosed by land (and is usually smaller than a gulf).
A sound is a wide inlet of the sea or ocean that is parallel to the coastline; it often separates a coastline from a nearby island.

One of several prior discussions of icebergs; some history of B-15, one of the largest icebergs ever seen. A recent image shows B-15A with three of its surviving calves.

Dandy! And marginally alarming.

Well, baying is a type of loud sound...

Very interesting, erebora!

Here's a satellite image as of yesterday (via this page, fist link), but I'm having a hard time getting my polar bearings (okay, shoot me; I couldn't resist the pun!). Where is the Drygalski ice tongue in relation to B-15A? Is it that brighter white line directly below it?

If only Long Island would drift away (less the part that is Brooklyn). The beaches are nice, but I still would prefer that most of LI would disappear, or at least most of it's inhabitants....

As far as I can tell taz, the Drygalski is barely visible in that JPG (small and under a cloud). But it should be just to the upper right of B-15A.

I wonder what the sound of the impact will be?
