Blue Anus A small, mysterious neon sign in a window on the fourth floor.

I don't want to be exposed to that sort of thing, thank you very much.

The glowing red cock on the right is staring at the distant, beckoning purple anus.

Well it is.

Well, the 'rollover' image dosn't seem to have been taken from the street, so it couldn't be all that mysterious.

Some hipster paid money to make a dumb joke? Wow. Completely impressive.

Excellent point, delmoi.

The bar in the foreground is called "The Cock." The semiotics aren't that difficult to figure out.
posted by thirdparty at 9:06 AM on January 13, 2005

dhoyt, it's trying to avert its eyes, but can't, for reasons that I don't fully understand yet.

That's got nothing on this puppy.
posted by 31d1 at 9:11 AM on January 13, 2005

"Je sus" I'd get confused by that french too.
posted by TwelveTwo at 9:13 AM on January 13, 2005

Perhaps it's a misspelling of "je suce"?
posted by soyjoy at 9:31 AM on January 13, 2005

Additional: Too bad this is not selling anything, as then I could make the joke it was AnusBlue.. har har har.
posted by TwelveTwo at 9:33 AM on January 13, 2005

I don't get it, where do I put my credit card number in?

The connection between the cock and the anus is undeniable.

I've seen a Black Angus Steakhouse with the proper letter's neon burned out resulting in the wonderfully enticing:
"Black An us"

Wait, so we can blindly attribute anything to "hipsters" now? Or just things that we don't like? Awesome. Now I have an excuse for any occasion- "The hipsters did it!" (Really, I think this is more a function of Alphabet City than expert-level irony, which I assume was what you were implying)
posted by Swampjazz! at 9:52 AM on January 13, 2005

Hipsters are the terrorists of 2005. Coming soon: "War Against Hip."

I'm already warming up my Sharpies for a "Not in my name" protest sign.

So, should they change the name of that street to "Taint Lane"?

Wait. Maybe a bad idea.

"War Against Hip."

Well they do have a secret underground network, although I think it's more about shows than blowing stuff up.

But who know, that might change at any second ...

Then again, it's not like a "war against x" actually needs any real justification,
if you just keep saying it long enough - it will happen.

Does it have anything to do with this?

Suhweet.

posted by undule at 10:30 AM on January 13, 2005

cmicali: What's amazing about that is they actualy used much more opaque ink for the 'hello sphincter' then for the rest of the images on the bag. That's probably why there's a noticeable, offset shadow behind the text while the other images don't cause one. Facinating. I still can't figure out why the shadow is 'dropped' a few 'pixles' when the photograph was obviously taken with a flash camera.

AFX, my favorite burnout example is the local "Mattress Discounter," eventually inadvertantly reduced to the suggestive "Mattress Disco."
posted by dougunderscorenelso at 10:41 AM on January 13, 2005

cmicali: I was going to tell you that was fake but delmoi already expounded. Also note that the same font was used for the added text box at the bottom of the picture.
posted by puke & cry at 10:51 AM on January 13, 2005

Dang dougunderscorenelso, that beat the best I've seen which was "Ant Burger."

Matress Disco, hot.

On a side note, we are very off topic at this point. I remember a time when the comments were about hipsters and anuses, or perhaps anal hipsters.

If you approach the Due Amici at...12th and 3rd? Wherever it is. At any rate, if you approach it at the right angle, the neon sign says "ASS PIZZA."

And then you go there and the pizza is, indeed, ass. But did my observing the sign as much make it so...did my observation determine the outcome? These questions shall be answered at another time. For now, do not eat ass pizza.
posted by Sticherbeast at 11:36 AM on January 13, 2005

delmoi/puke & cry - Kudos on the detective work, but I thought it was slightly obvious that was a photoshop, no?
posted by cmicali at 11:47 AM on January 13, 2005

"anal hipsters"-- Is that in the obsessive-compulsive sense, or "Man, I totally had that up my ass like, four years ago"?
posted by Swampjazz! at 11:48 AM on January 13, 2005

There is a PC Richard and Son on Atlantic and 4th ave in Brooklyn, some bright spark shot out* some letters so for at least a couple months it read:

"P C R I HARD ON"

It made my day, every day.

Wow, there is a ton of great stuff on this site. Many thanks for the wonderful find.

Check out the current exhibits including "5 speed vibrating ottoman lined with pink mink fur 12" deep hole" and the "nyc story matchbook & assorted projects". It took me a moment before I realized why it was a story matchbook.

"Since the early 1990’s, Tobias Wong’s work has provoked and challenged the limits of contemporary value systems through its use of irony and humour. His work, blah, blah, blah…blah, blah, blah"

"I woke up one morning to find that my cat did an installation in homage to Mel Bochner."
posted by nTeleKy at 11:57 AM on January 13, 2005

Yeah, I'm concerned. Tobias Wong seemingly produces clever, witty, often pointedly funny and occasionally gorgeous pieces of art - that I get. Does that mean it's not really art?

Can someone appropriately qualified please deconstruct them for me in language I can't possibly understand and restore the status quo?

Much obliged!

kcds - would it help if I told you you only think you get it, and everybody else is laughing at you in another room? No? Forget I mentioned it then.

I think there needs to be a new Godwin's Law spinoff:

A small fire at the local Bass Pro shop caused chuckles when it burned out the first letter of their sign..

I'm not holding out much hope that this sign might lose the exact right letter, but, honestly, does it have to?

This may be a bit off-topic, but I thought the obviously photoshopped opaque text in the "hello spincter!" graphic was just a translation overlaid on the original, probably accurate, image...
