I think the chick hurt her ear

That was pretty amazing.

And, Yeah, the's holding her head but no one seems to care...

Simultaneously awesome and stupid. I laughed with amazement; my wife said, "Assholes, she hurt her head."

It could have been a whole lot worse for basket girl. It seems like they did it on the first try (by the way they were planning before and reacting after. ) Luckily, too, b/c that girl could have been severely injured or died.

Fake.

This movie will obviously tread ground previously unexplored by lesser cheerleading films such as Bring It On. 3 points!

Galvatron-

Are you certain or speculating? Seemed pretty real to me, even after watching after your comment.
posted by mic stand at 10:57 AM on January 24, 2005

Speculating. Looks to me like she is launched in front of the hoop, they photoshopped it and added sound effects. The thing with the ear is a very calculated attempt to add credibility.
posted by Galvatron at 11:02 AM on January 24, 2005

I agree...fake

Go to this site and you go to the cheerleader toss and you'll have the 'play' and 'pause' options.

Play and pause a bit as it she starts into the air and compare to as she's going through the hoop. Things get extremely blurry as she passes through the hoop and the physics of it won't sit right with you (i.e. the way it looks like her left hand should get caught on the rim or the way the net plays out as she passes through.

I just stepped through the movie frame by frame. It's possible that it's real, but I doubt it. She really starts to overrotate as soon as her feet go through the hoop, and for no apparent reason.

The 'questionable' frames are:

Her back looks like it's way too far out.

Then again, I think she's holding the back of her head at the end rather than her ear, so it may well be real. Damn but it'd hurt.

I'm in the "fake" camp as well.
Discussed on Snopes here.

what are the chances..really? The trajectory of the toss and her body alignment would have to by spot-on perfect....how did her feet not get caught in the net?
Than again, maybe i'm just jealous that her scrawny butt can clear a basketball hoop.
posted by nanu at 11:14 AM on January 24, 2005

I say faked, but fun, anyway. Look at the guy behind the tossee just before the toss. He's not looking straight up at the basket; it looks to me that the group is quite a bit in front of the basket.

Again, um, can we get a better description when linking to a 4+Mb file?

Sorry to be one of those dillholes who complains...

I don't buy it for a second, the first weatherman link either. They're both fakes.

So, should we take bets as to how many days pass until some poor anorexic cheerleader loses a leg or has her neck broken by lagered-up frat boys attempting to reproduce this idiotic faux-feat, sure to be followed by press releases of earnest contrition by the makers of the ad?
posted by digaman at 12:03 PM on January 24, 2005

Fake. If you see the frame just before the ones lowlife shows, it looks like her hands are going to get ripped up by the rim and the net, especially her left hand.

What is strange is how this differs from the same frame in the Snopes thread!

Sorry for the large images

Is the Snopes guy the perpetrator, uploading a fake frame that is less incriminating?

Also the "swish" motion of the net after she goes through is too perfect.

I was in the theater last night and Best Buy presented a "pump up the volume" commercial which looked like a movie and ended up being a phone advertisement and "turn your ringer off" message.

I'm suprised nobody has said Best Buy Blue here yet.

Somewhere an executive is giggling about "mind share"
posted by cavalier at 12:57 PM on January 24, 2005

It's just a fake movie that is a ploy to get everyone to talk about it; therefore get more free publicity for the movie. I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it.

This is correct. For the past few years, AMC theatres, in conjunction with Best Buy and one or more cell phone manufacturers, have been presenting pre-film advertising--something that starts out looking like a trailer for an actual film but is then interrupted by a cell phone sound effect in the surround channels. Characters in the trailer, who were involved in activities requiring silence (submarine warfare, buffalo hunt, cheerleading competition) then break the fourth wall and say something to the effect of, "it's coming from the audience." The end effect is more a "turn your phones off" reminder than an advert for Best Buy or the other companies, though their logos are displayed at the end.

This is the first time, as far as I know, that there has been a web presence for this advertising.

I'd still like to know where the Snopes guy got the different frame, and it's fun to wonder who might be targeting the Snopes discussion areas, like Amazon's reviews section has been reduced to (IMHO) untrustworthiness.
posted by fleacircus at 1:17 PM on January 24, 2005

Regardless if this is fake or not, the individuals participating in this activity, and/or distributing, it are extremely lucky and dumb (read this as absolute idiots). She could have very easily caught her pony tail on the fingers of the rim and ripped her scalp off, broke her neck on the rim, or split it and landed on her head. The rewards do not equal the risks with this activity. If this was attempted nine more times, many of them would have resulted in a 911 call and immediate medical attention.

I would hate to see a college team attempt this after practice and kill or maim someone, fake or real. This video can be used to perfectly explain poor planning and poor execution.

Just because she didn't die doesn't mean this was successful.
posted by sled at 1:18 PM on January 24, 2005

With the amount of CG effects, I'm more apt to think this is fake.

hoboynow, nod, oh how I wish they could push some of those 30 minute pre-movie advertising profits into .. I don't know... cleaning the seats.. but hey, margins are margins.

I just found bits like the submarine one much more well done, and less logos at the end. This series really feels much more direct in its advertising. We'll have to see...
posted by cavalier at 1:28 PM on January 24, 2005

even though I knew it was fake when I saw it the first time, I just had to decompile it.

There's no way her body could've done that.

Nawww... the expected number of misses in ten tries for someone with decent skill will be much lower, maybe two or three, unless we're talking about Shaquille O'Neal. But at the average success rate, ten consecutive makes is far from unlikely. Michael Williams made 97 in a row.

Dude, IT'S FAKE. Chill out.

Of course they do. Well, unless your the girl and all... really, relax. No pain. No gain.

Anyone wanna shoot some hoop and grab a beer?

I'll go with the fake camp on the account of the men's reactions at the end. They somewhat ignored her. I would have thought they would have piled on her or lift her in the air. As the feat would not have been accomplished without her.
posted by thomcatspike at 3:40 PM on January 24, 2005

As the feat would have been 90% her doing in the first place.

Oh, for the love of Christ, that's a fake. Four degrees of freedom (x.y, x rotation, y rotation), plus proper loft? My dynamics professor couldn't do that with a Cray; some college students supposedly did that IRL? bullshit.
posted by notsnot at 4:31 PM on January 24, 2005

SOMEbody should actually finish their sophomore dynamics course before spouting off in public about 4 DOF "plus proper loft". Oh, and read about 90% of the comments that preceded you. Of course it's fake, silly consumer. Go back to making Adam Sandler rich.

Why, yes, that did feel good!

What's funny to me is that it's on a website that is promoting a movie and there's still people who think it might be real. Of course it's fake. A good fake the first time you watch it, but once you go "err, is that fake? that might be fake" and watch it again, it's pretty obvious.

What's sad to me is that someone implied in his/her post that this clip could be responsible for hurting people who mimic it.

Sorry, but if someone mimics this and gets hurt because they saw it on TV - that's just darwin doing his job. I know this sounds abhorrently cold - but really, we need to start taking personal responsibility for our actions instead of blaming TV. I'm pretty tired of hearing that as an excuse.

This thread is dead, but for the benefit of future readers, this clip is a promo for Pump Up, a weird fake-movie turn-off-your-cell-phone advertisement.

from Snopes:

Claim: "Some people actually believe that the lady through the hoop trick was real and got quite upset about it."

Status: TRUE

Origins: Yes, as crazy as it sounds, some people actually felt that the stunt was real and that the girl had indeed injured herself or was in INCREDIBLE danger. Other crazy 'people' also believe the stunt to be a moral and physical danger on a par with handguns and meth... etc..

Okay, confession time, every time I see this (and I've seen it just a whole bunch of times) I have brief vivid fantasies of the perverse, wanton celebratory adventures of the quintet following their triumphant stunt. It's because I'm bad.
