Drinking the State of the Union February 2, 2005 1:55 PM Subscribe
Alcohol and the State of the Union. The most painless - or painful - way to get through the State of the Union address. I know, it was briefly discussed two years ago, but I thought we could all use a refresher. Hey, I clicked on that link and ended up playing the game. It was much more fun than undiluted politics. This one is harder, you have to wear costumes; and last years is a little better written, but just not as concise and to the point.

Why, these people act as though they know what he's going to say tonight! I'm shocked! I wonder if this is in the best interest of ...ahem... "National Security (TM)." posted by TheStorm at 2:04 PM on February 2, 2005
Going to have to plug the TV back into the wall for this. posted by sled at 2:12 PM on February 2, 2005

a comprehesive and fun first post! i'll be drinking because of the general awfulness of it.
(on a local note, I wonder if they'll be playing that in abundance here tonight). posted by moonbird at 2:53 PM on February 2, 2005

ok, that's clearly last year's drinking game, because any list without a mention of social security just ain't paying attention. posted by sachinag at 4:21 PM on February 2, 2005
Would work better if it were Bush doing the shots. posted by rushmc at 4:49 PM on February 2, 2005
I think I might have to just not watch.
Last time at least I could pretend he might leave in a few months. Now, you know, it's just sad. posted by blacklite at 5:11 PM on February 2, 2005
Chicken Soup For me this year, but I empathize with you. Lo, those many years ago, I remember the disappearing six-pack of Pilsner Urquel during the post-impeachment Clinton SUA (and that was still when I could not imagine voting "R" in a Presidential election!) posted by ParisParamus at 5:23 PM on February 2, 2005
I hear, Moonbird, that they are indeed playing it there tonight. But I already got hijacked & drunken, so no game for me.

well, that sucked as usual--Bush gets hard when he talks of war, as usual. posted by amberglow at 7:07 PM on February 2, 2005
During the State of the Union Address, a pale is cast over all of Park Slope, Brooklyn. The residents, in front of their TV sets sad, depressed, gaze in disbelief. There is heavy drinking. On President Street, and Garfield, even the dogs are sad. As the President speaks, in brownstone after brownstone, Labrador Retrievers and Poodles alike, sit on their hind quarters, look at the screen and howl. posted by ParisParamus at 7:07 PM on February 2, 2005
yup--dogs know when there's something to dislike--they have better bs detectors than some i could mention.

Last night's Drunken State of the Union went off really well. It's a lot of fun to do this in a bar. I was not overzealous with the bell, though one of my friends was overzealous in his pre-State of the Union drinking and ended up, well, y'know.
We had people of every stripe yelling things out, surprised patrons entering the bar and quite a few call-outs of "bullshit." And I got through another politicized evening without anyone knowing any better about where I am on the spectrum. posted by Captaintripps at 5:44 AM on February 3, 2005
You are correct, sirr. That was an appaleing mistake on my part. Appalling. posted by ParisParamus at 5:55 AM on February 3, 2005
It's fun to read, but the problem with using it as an actual drinking game (as with most television-based drinking games) is that there's far too many rules to try to keep track of.
The genius of Hi Bob is in having only a single rule. posted by DevilsAdvocate at 9:24 AM on February 3, 2005
