Wow.
Just wow.
Looks like I need a bigger hard drive again.
(although I would like to point out that I always feel slightly guilty on the whole bandwith thing...)

Timed out.
Dang that's a lotta Maiden. And Madonna.

That's a lot of sonic youth, as well.
The bill for my new HD is in the mail, moonbird.

Lots of good stuff. The Queens of the Stone Age song, "Go With the Flow" is worth the download, if you haven't seen it. Very well done. (possibly NSFW, though)

OMG. I would date you moonbird, if I weren't hetero and hideously malformed. And if you wanted to, of course.

OMG. Duran Duran videos! Glad I have a new larger hard drive. : )
posted by SisterHavana at 6:32 PM on April 10, 2005

I can't explain why, but for some strange reason, I'm distressed by the words "Duran Duran" and "hard drive" appearing so close together.
posted by jonp72 at 6:48 PM on April 10, 2005

There are a couple of Sonic Youth videos labelled as being from SNL - I think they're actually from the old show Night Music (hosted by David Sandborn and Jools Holland). I saw that in the late 80s/early 90s and it changed my life.

Videos killed rock and roll.

From the Lester Bangs "letter from heaven" at the beginning of Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung":

"God keeps talking about something called 'MTV.' He says he didn't want me to be alive to see it."

I never knew Radiohead made a video for "Like Spinning Plates." It absolutely does the song justice. The Sigor Ros video is cool too

Just found this... can't believe my eyes (syd barret-pink floyd, jugband blues).

I down-loaded the New Order video for "In a Lonely Place" and realised that I was there when they filmed it.
I'm in tears.
Thanks for the link.

Dangit. No sign of The Art of Noise on either page. I'd love to find a copy of 'Peter Gunn' and/or 'Close to the Edit'.

Old enough to remember when MTV played music videos 24/7...
posted by bitmage at 8:05 PM on April 10, 2005

Bitimage: Close to the Edit was the first video I looked for. That was simply amazing, I was about 13 when I saw it and haven't seen it since. But I think about it. Lots. It would also be great with The Eurhythmics' equally weird I Love to Listen to Beethoven.
posted by moonbird at 8:13 PM on April 10, 2005

Just watched that "Like Spinning Plates" video. How'd they do that? It's like an extremely big version of that 360 light painting stuff I've seen posted here a few times. Amazing.

Which reminds me, why is the only place I can see decent music videos in America in 2005 is a matchbook-sized window on the internet? I mean, whenever I travel to Europe or Asia, they have cool stuff on MTV. But here, I live within 2 miles of the FUCKING WORLD HEADQUARTERS OF MTV and I can't see a decent music video to save my life. (And don't start on that Fuse shit. Jesus, they suck.)

How is it that I haven't seen the Bjork video where licorice shoots out of her nipples until tonight?

where? when? cool!

It looks like it was at the PSV in Hulme - '82 or '83.
I saw them do a better version in Hanley in '83 I think - they were smashed out of their heads, barely able to operate the new toys they'd bought. This was just after "Blue Monday" came out and just before "Power, Corruption and Lies". They came on, as usual, an hour late and laid waste to the audience. "Blue Monday" at the end - they walked off-stage and left the sequencers running as the lights came up.
They were/are one of the best bands I have ever seen live - they could make music that you could dance to that made the place they were playing in feel like a cathedral.

Mm, hard drive, meet Duran Duran. Duran Duran, enjoy my hard drive. (That was just for you, jonp72.)

On another note, none of the Queen videos seem to be available, nor the video for LL Cool J's "Goin' Back to Cali." Foo.

posted by cali at 9:03 PM on April 10, 2005

Hm, I just caught the Cali video on godawful Real PLayer, but it actually looked rather crisp. Meanwhile, regarding New Orderm "true Faith" is a surrealistic treat that I dig highly back in 8th grade or whatever.

JT: Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and now Le Tigre.

The newest Beck video "Epro" is awesome. The sound sucks tho.

cali,
Thanks for the link, but every time I click the "I'm Over 18" button on the page, it takes me to an entrance page. When I click on "Enter", it takes me back to the first page. What am I doing wrong? I enabled cookies and java for the site (Firefox).

Er, never mind. I apparently only thought I'd enabled cookies. I'm a moron.

Anyway, anyone else know of any good music video sites? The ones that have been posted here are great, but the more the better.
posted by Sangermaine at 1:05 AM on April 11, 2005

All right, I've begun to figure out which ones load and which ones don't.

What is the plot of the Union of the Snake video? For that matter, what's the plot of the song?

I wish this thing were sorted chronologically rather than alphabetically. '80s boys were so pretty.

oldskool hiphop . Open dir with wma files only. This directory is just the beginning. Browse back and you'll find more bboying and graffiti video than you can take in one session. Meanwhile I'm looking for online disco video's (seriously) but havent found anything so far.

Wow. First of all, it says that the DJ Shadow video they have there was directed by Wong Kar-Wai, which is totally nuts. He has a new movie out, which I've been meaning to see, but I never would have thought to pair him with Shadow. I can't wait to watch the video.

Beyond all of the Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry videos (download them if you don't have the dvds), they have one of my all time favorite videos: Rabbit in Your Headlights. The last 20-30 seconds has one of the most beautiful images ever put to film. Haunting.

Great stuff, moonbird. nickerbocker, we share a favorite Beck song. I can't wait to download that.

And just to back up jonmc's seemingly reactionary comment a little - Close to the Edit was mentioned. I consider this song, in combination with Beat Box (Diversion One) to be one of the great meta-musical artworks of the late 20th century. I listened to those two innumerable times for years, blissfully unaware that there even was a video.

When The Art of Noise came up in conversation with a friend, she practically retched and said, aren't they the ones that had that godawful video where the little girl's destroying a piano? Huh? I said. Maybe. She was dead-set against ever listening to any AON because she hated the vibe of that video. Finally I got a chance to see it, and although I like the video, its jerky inanity is completely antithetical to the musical vibe I had gotten from the audio. For my friend, it's too late to try to convey any of that, because the visual image is inextricable from the sounds.

A cautionary tale, y'all.

360 light stuff, for trinarian. The Radiohead clip looks like an extreme version of it - they set up a Matrix-style bullet-time series of still cameras, open the shutters in a dark room, then paint with the lights, then set off a flash to get the room and the bodies on film, then animate the whole thing. So cool.

Oh, and that Sigur Ros video you recommended? I still can't get it out of my head today.

If you are looking for a ton of Music Videos check out Blastro.com. They're not quicktime, but are definitely better quality than much of what you'll see out there.

A cautionary tale, y'all.

Then again, I probably would have never heard of tAoN if it wasn't for that video. I think this was before MTV had even arrived in my town, so I probably saw it on HBO's Video Jukebox.

It's amazing how much things have changed. We were so disconnected then. Now a kid wondering about a video could instantly find out everything about the band and a community of fans on the net.

Meanwhile, I'm feeling connected. Thanks to MeFi I just got to see the 'Close to the Edit' video again for the first time in 20 years. Thanks moonbird!
