The UN eliminated Mr Bassiouni's job last week after Washington had pressed for his mandate to be changed so that it would no longer cover the US military.

So... what could the US have done to the UN if the UN refused the 'request'? Is there a reason the UN caved-in like a French airport?

good use of the obvious tag.

I'm not as much of a MeFi "purist" as others (which I expect to arrive with furious anger any minute), but come on, you know better.

Is there a reason the UN caved-in like a French airport?

I'm guessing it's because the UN has a lot of buildings that look like Chinese embassies from a bombardier's point of view.
posted by clevershark at 7:18 PM on April 24, 2005

P_G - upon reflection, maybe 'obvious' in the tag would have gone over better than a Fark 'obvious' tag... not to mention more mefi-like in its subtlety?

They should be held responsible under the doctrine of "command responsibility," it said.

But they haven't been, at all. I guess they're housecleaning in advance of Bolton's arrival (and his lopping off of 10 stories of the bldg?)

Ok, rather than discuss the substance of the post, let's all busy ourselves proclaiming our intellectual and even moral superiority to fark.com.

WE R 1337! WE PWN0R5 FARK.COM!!1!1!

(Oh, and clevershark, despite not finding it necessary to disambiguate himself from fark.com, wins the thread.)

nightchrome - Is that a bad thing? I get my news there, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I went to fark for the first time in 2 years yesterday. I felt like an alcoholic getting a sniff of the booze. But the photoshop threads are still fun.

Anyway, on metatopic, if there is any more appropriate use for P_G's none-too-subtle act of civil disobedience, I can't think of it. That was a really fantastic novelty.

Now, on topic, is anyone surprised? Just imagine if Herr Bolton gets the UN Ambassador's position. He'll be able to bang his shoe around and get people fired any time he wants.

(ok, ok, this isn't about Bolton, but still..)

I never heard of FARK until I heard about it here in Metafilter.
But that was way back when I was a non-posting, lurking, trolling wannabe..

But back on topic.. Is this just a little friendly slapping in the face so the UN can get used to the HARD ASS FUCKING it's supposedly going to get with Bolton?

Foreplay, if you will...?
posted by Balisong at 8:06 PM on April 24, 2005

bh - Not a bad thing at all, I'm just saying that criticizing the use of an image tag because it's used on Fark...as though everyone here were somehow above such things...is hypocritical.

You lose. I don't think I've been to FARK in 2005.

Now, do I win the dollars? Or the donuts?

Also, it's not criticism of "an image tag"... which, btw, generally IS frowned upon here... it is the usgae of a quite particular image tag, one that is more-or-less a trademark of another site.
posted by Ynoxas at 8:15 PM on April 24, 2005

I don't like it when people just repost fpp links they scraped off of Fark, but I fail to see how clever use of an image tag in the style Fark uses is going to corrupt and destroy mefi.
posted by nightchrome at 8:16 PM on April 24, 2005

nightchrome - exactly. Ignore it and it'll go away. 'though I guess this dogpile slapdown on P_G will discourage it in the future, for anyone who has seen this thread. I pre-emptively feel sorry for the next poor sod who thinks that it'd be a good idea to pull the same stunt.

But whatever (and my own snark aside), this is really important, newsfilterish as it may be. Is the UN losing strategically to build up a better 'end game' or has the USA got such a militaristically strong hand that it can, basically, do whatever the fucking hell it wants?

Since that was French, I'm not apoligzing for the language.

Back on topic, it's sad that even saying "why doesn't anybody do something about this kind of thing?" is just tired and mock-worthy now. The truth of the matter is that even when attempts to hush up whistle-blowers are this blatant, nobody cares.
posted by nightchrome at 8:26 PM on April 24, 2005

Was it P_G's use of the tag that doomed this thread to off-topicness, or was it the people who complained about it?

Realists will say he should have expected it and if he wanted real discussion, he should not have used it.

Idealists will say the important thing is to stay on topic despite distractions, and people shouldn't complain without introducing substance.

Me? I'm just stirring the pot.

So was this lifted off of Fark? Not a surprise if so, after all major blogs & forums emulate eachother, don't they? We should be glad that they do, that's how news gets around in my only-computer-literate generation.

So yet another example surfaces of the massive rot that pervades the U.S. Army, and people are worried about a Fark image tag?

Anywho, here's the full text of Bassiouni's report. Coalition actions start at about page 16.

Apathy is the new black.

Many (younger - no offense) people I've talked to said he shouldn't have spoken up if he expected to keep his job.

Perhaps power is the new black?
