Glitch 1UP-staged once again...

Manic and mellow, the pop of YMCK shows that tight composition and live performance of video game-styled music isn't just for rock bands or eclectic GameBoy experiments, just as delightful 8-bit chip music or "chiptunes" make their way across the globe...

Nice. I bookmarked them last year, but held off from buying the "Family Music" album with the costs of overseas shipping. Now it has a US release too! (available here). Thanks.

By the way, this is some of the least contrived nintendo music out there. They've really managed to embrace the fun of the 8-bit sound without making too many cheesy mario jokes, but rather composing saccharine sweet loungey pop tunes with plenty of melodic structure..

YMCK has also shown up on comps from the small NYC label Music Related, whose releases can be purchased by the fabulous distributor folks at tone vendor.

Rad. MarkVII. That just missed being on my MetaChat mix with "Spherical Rhymes", which is just silly. See also: Nullsleep, Yuppster, 8-bit Rockers, Commie 64, more.

I haven't really heard anything yet that makes any cheesy Mario jokes, except for maybe yuppster, but they're just weird and surreal about it.

I really hope I don't get tired of this stuff - that it doesn't get played out or tiresome for me.

But I doubt it will as long as it stays as fun and pure as it has been. Thanks Rothko.

Plus I'm just addicted to PCM, square wave noises and clicky digital FM synth tracks.

Err, that "Thanks Rothko" was supposed to be at the end, not at the "I hope it doesn't get played out for me" line. It looks kinda funny there. Dunno how that happened.

I know what you mean, but, once normalizing the sound against what really happened in my life--years spent in front of such machines, hours and hours spent with friends, having fun, I got a dose of real sugar.

If you dig this stuff, I highly recommend y'all stop by the Myspace page for Jonny Classic and the Classic Johns. I've been listening to the first single (posted there) over and over for days. The album that's coming out is real hot, too. The music is mostly sequenced on a Game Boy using Nanoloop 1.2 and then was tracked into a computer, where haunting vocals and some guitar were added. The whole thing is obscenely dope.
