La Mascotte: At a time when some of their members are under attack mascots gather today in Philadelphia to open their own Hall of Fame. Not in attendance: Tommy Lasorda, abandoned mascot Youppi, curling mascot Brier Bear, ex-Olympic mascot Izzy and others who couldn't get out of mascot school.

While the Philly Phanatic never fell afoul of political correctness, it hasn't brought a World Series to Philly in 25 years. Maybe if the Phanatic put a bone through his nose or donned an eagle feather headdress things might be different....

I hate the Phanatic. Scared me as a child.

Someone please tell me the monkey in the bathroom in that third clip on the Mascot Hall of Fame video page isn't doing what I think he's doing. Please tell me that.

And that Tommy Lasorda link is hilarious. Um, unless you're a mascot. Great post.

I believe he was "peeling his banana." Sorry to shatter your innocence mediareport.

You can become a voting member for just $35.

My god, where's the sense of integrity? It's like the mascot community has sold out.

BTW, don't diss the Phanatic.

They must include Cyril the Swan. Swansea's mascot. He's been in trouble with the police, appeared in panto and is even being lined up for a move into the bigtime with Chelsea. What a Mascot!

What about Springy, the Olympic mascot designed by Homer Simpson. I loved the way the razor sharps ends could poke your eye out!

How about Izzy/Whatzit, from the Atlanta games?

From the FAQ:

Is Izzy a sperm?
No.

Oh boy.

I think the San Diego Chicken ought to be a shoo-in for the MHoF. Ted G., you rock!

Youppi recalls his history with the Expos.

There were many funny moments with Youppi, which I’ll cover eventually, such as losing a shoe, spilling food, getting a woman to cry, playing with a vibrator, breaking a table, etc, etc.

And yet the Expos were only able to draw 900 people to Stade Olympique in the final years? Go figure ...

LilBucner: Now you know that isn't true. it was way more than 900. I bet 9000 at least. In fact, the Expos outdrew the Brewers franchise until The Franchise Killer took over the team. (self-link)

By the way, the Phanatic, The Chicken and Youppi are already in baseball's Hall of Fame.

alumshubby: The Chicken was one of the inaugural entrants to the MHoF.

I hate the Phanatic. Scared me as a child.

They used to have him come visit the kids at the summer camp where I worked. It was mass panic. The kids would start screaming and climbing over each other just to get away from him. Yet, year after year he was there.
